Ulog #018 : On the way to an Eco-farm in Bayawan, Negros Oriental Part 1

in ulog •  6 years ago

It has not been long that organic farms or eco-farms have been cropping up in the Philippines. Growing-up in the province, and being surrounded with farmlands, definitely organic farming wasn't the norm back then or even now in our place.

I can say that learning of this way of farming in the country is sort of extra-ordinary. To learn that we Filipinos are getting health-conscious nowadays is a huge CHANGE to our way of life. To actually have seen one, going to an organic farm in Bayawan was a great experience for me.

Meeting Kuya Jotham when he dropped-by at the Dagsa's Art Sanctuary in Bayawan, an invitation to @flabbergast-art and me to his visit his eco-farm made us visit his place. Although it wasn't that far outside of town, it needed a tricycle ride and a walk uphill to reach it. Apparently there were habal-habals(motorcycles) to bring us up but since we had to wait for one, we decided to just hike. A rare occurence for me here in the Philippines.

"Dorothy, you are no longer in Oz!"

Staring at this view brought me back to my previous life of long ago, seeing the English countryside. Definitely a nostalgic moment suffice to say in Bayawan.

A goat for a pet?

We burst out laughing upon realising it was a goat! Seriously? I've never seen such a thing. I've seen a piglet in one's living room abroad... Well, a goat is rarely seen as a pet in the Philippines.

Mansanitas

Scattered along the road on the way up were mansanita trees with branches full of already ripened fruits. I swear we were not hungry lols...but seeing so many of those trees in one place, compared to just one tree in the neighbourhood where I grew up, plus Kuya Marlon and I sort of forgotten on when were the last times we have eaten its' fruits...

Care for some mansanitas?

@flabbergast-art in action

Some residents told us to just get on to it when we asked. I remember during the @walkofhope bamboo planting event last April, the kids sort of did a bit of harvesting for their dessert so it's not as if they don't eat them as trees can also be seen from their backyards.

Is it true though that these fruits have healing properties?

I need to do research on this one, does anyone know of its' English name?

At the eco-farm next...

I wish i had a farm too, its very relaxing and stress-free!

Buy a small plot of land..not necessarily a farm..but you can if you want to☺

if i have the money why not. at present our financial status cannot afford to buy a lot. but i have a mini garden to make soon. i hope i will have the time.

I meant not now but having a garden would be cool...you will have time even for half an hour is enough. There's joy in gardening.

You are right, there is really joy in it.. in the near future i will have my own garden..

Definitely! Go for it😶

What a lovely landscape...

My in laws have mansanitas but they rarely eat them however their chickens do..

Wala na nga sa porch nong umuwe kami.
Un baka was far from the road noh

What a stunning view @immarojas. That's a beautiful photograph. I look forward to hearing more. 😊

Reminded me of the English countryside Gillian...though the place only had 1 cow🤣😂
So thin too!
Have you seen that fruit?

No. I've never seen mansanitas before @immarojas, at least not in real likfe. But I think you've written about them in another post so I've seen a photograph. 😁

Indeed you have Gillian..let me do a bit of research on it☺

Haha, I love goats! In fact I had one myself as a pet and as a lawn mower at one stage:D

Lawn mower should be ok🤣🤣 Baby goats are cute though so maybe.

One day I will try and dig up some old photos and make a post on it😛

That will be the day mate but do go on lols

Wow a goat for a pet? I thought people prefer dogs and rabbits lol this is an amazing farm. Is that tomatoes in that hand?

Nope, those are mansanitas, ive no clue of the english name. That's on the way to the farm☺

Hahaha okay, I thought they were goats

Research about Jamaican cherry and you'll be amazed.

obviously I was thinking so too I'd certainly do that, never heard of it.

Read on it...when you want some, there's loads in Bayawan here in the Philippines.

That's a beautiful landscape to behold. I love the green scenery.

Goat for a pet? Well maybe... I used to tend for animals when I was young and goats are one of them. I wash their pens and play with them, but not get them inside the house. 😀

And mansanitas? We call that aratiles in the north. Now I realize it looks like a small apple, mansanas. Though the inside part is not like the cottony apple. It is a cherry type of fruit. Try to search for mansanitas on the internet and it will point you to aratiles. Here's a snapshot of my search.

We used to make "sungkit" of those from the neighbor's tree during my childhood in Zambales. Others would even climb the tree. Almost everyday, kids would look up to see if there is one worth picking even if not fully ripe yet. The tree has very limited wasted fruit. It was fun! That was the opposite case of an aratiles tree I saw along EDSA at the corner between SM Makati and Dusit Thani. Walang pumapansin sa bunga niya, naglalaglagan lang. Gusto ko sanang pumitas eh kaso.... hehehe...

Pitasin mo ate sayang! Aratiles is the tagalog term, in Ilocos is mansanita.
Farm animal nga ang goat, pinapaken ng damo sa tabi-tabi. Of course cute mga babies🤣😅😆

Hehehe nakakahiya eh. Ang daming nakatambay, baka sitahin ako. 😄

Pag sitahin ka..tell them adami health benefits ng aratiles so wag syang snubin🤣😆

Sige, lalakasan ko ang loob ko next time. 😄

Haha.. enjoy!

😉

Es muy interesante que en Philippines estén ahora cambiando para mejorar su Agricultura y la cambien a una Organica mucho mas sustentables para todos @immarojas

Gracias! i can only assume what those mean☺

Yes, they do have healing properties. Some people believe that they treat stomach problems.

Awesome picture

Cool..let me research on that as this fruit isn't recognised as such in the Philippines.

Alright!

Paborito ko ang mansanitas since I was a kid. We call them sarisa there in our town in Negros. Even until now, whenever I get the chance to find a tree of this, I always look for the fruits. Never knew of their health benefits though. I was inclined to them kasi masarap sya :)

The english Cerise kc is different from mansanitas. But it's called with many names so ayan. Madame benefits but i need to research more on that.
