throwback to the '90s.jpg

Generation Y Cafe

According to some, Generation Y are those born during the 1980s and 1990s. Others said that Generation Y and Millenials are the same - those who were born from 1977 to 1995. Whoever comes up with such labels? Regardless of labels and terms, for whatever generation, there are both good and bad things. This cafe takes you down memory lane - blast from the past - at least back to the '90s.

A bike outside the cafe

This bike installation is a perfect spot for a selfie or a groufie. It seems bike is the thing now to use as decoration. Bike is also a significant thing here in the our city because it is one of the popular activities that everyone who lived here or visited the city experienced. Whenever you are in the city, take time to visit Burnham Park and go for a bike at the biking area.

Dekada Nobenta simply means during the 1990s. "Taympers" written in front of the bike means to take a break. Going to this cafe will make time having a break and taking you back to the past. I remember going to the biking area either with friends or families whenever there was a chance and having fun, using that kind of bike. I cannot remember when was the last time I rode this kind of bike. It would be good to take my niblings there one of these days.

Any spot in the cafe is a good place to take photos. One part of the wall is a mural of some of the animes/cartoons showed locally then. These are shows shown in the morning or afternoon. Some of these were aired and then re-aired again and again. These are the shows that we look forward to. I remember how we would rush home from school when we were kids just to watch TV. What I would do then was to finish all my homework in school whenever I have the time so what when I got home, I have all the time and reason to watch TV much to the delight of my mom lol! There is a Tom Sawyer painted in there. I thought I have pictured it.

Opposite that is this wall:

P_20180730_193512.jpg

Then there is this wall and corner of antiquities.

P_20180730_193520.jpg

This is sort of a museum of stuff. The walls are posters of artists that were popular back then - both local and international. There are artists like Dona Cruz, Jolina Magdangal, Eraserheads (the best band ever), Parokya ni Edgar, etc. Savage Garden, Britney Spears, and you cannot forget Backstreet Boys, etc. Each poster have a few lines from one of their popular songs.

P_20180730_193630.jpg

There are VHS players, radios with cassette tape players, typewriter, walkman, video camera, an old CRT monitor and of course game consoles. Maybe I should donate our collection of cassette tapes here lol! We still have boxes of tapes stored here in our house.

Before PS, Wii and other gaming consoles, Nintendo is the thing. To maximize your '90s experience, go ahead, sit down and relax and please remove your shoes and play. If you are not into that, then there are other options for you.

There are board games like chess, snakes and ladders, Scrabble, etc. Better yet, take the "sungka" and play. If you don't know how to play the game, then this is the place to start doing so. You can show off your turumpo (spinning top) and yo-yo skills.

There is also a section for Archie comics, songhits and autograph/slumbook. Archie comics was being passed on in our class then of course away from the eyes of teachers. Comics is not allowed in school then. Archie is a rare thing back then so when someone acquires a copy, they would be kind enough to lend it to some people.

Thankfully, songhits were not prohibited and I remember that we used to jam with songs that we know and sing our hearts out. In school or in the dorm, when someone has a guitar, these magazines of popular songs with lyrics and cords would be brought out . A group would then be formed and jamming session commences. Music brings people together. This would also be an opportunity for boys go after the girls - wooing them with their guitar skills and singing prowess. Everybody would be looking forward to the new releases to learn the cords and lyrics of the new songs they heard.

I think I might have filled out a couple of slumbooks back then. There would be the usual teasing and intrigue about the question "Who is your crush? Describe him/her." You may write your likes and dislikes. You may choose to fill in or not. I cannot honestly remember what where the things I wrote in those books. I'm pretty sure more lies lol!

The couple in one of the tables were reliving it. First, they started singing some songs while playing the guitar. Then, they took out the pickup sticks and finally settled with Scrabble.

For me, I just came here for the food lol!

There were lots of choices like rice meals, pasta and sandwiches, hot and cold drinks like coffee, tea and frappes. We ordered spring rolls which has vegetables and chicken in it dipped in vinegar with onions and garlic. These rolls were a bit dry so the vinegar is a good mix to it. We also ordered spicy wings with potato chips. While the chicken is soft and juicy, it lacks the chilliness that I wanted. They put just enough salt in the food and it may even taste bland to those who like salty food but it is the right taste for me. We washed that with wintermelon milk tea which has enough amount of sugar. I like how they put a lot of ice in there. Taking a sip from the tea just drenched my thirst away. We finished that up with their banana split - two scoops of ube and one chocolate ice cream.

In front of the counter is a sari-sari (assorted) store of goodies. The items sold there were locally made food and sweets that were sold then. It's interesting that these are still being made and sold until today. This goes to show that some things are meant to last. Maybe there's forever after all lol!

There were also display of old models of phones and cameras. Talk about films! I remember how precious each shot that you take then. There is the anticipation and the excitement of how would the picture turn out to be. We have to take these films to studios for it to be printed. There is a lesson being taught here of patience and appreciation. Unlike now where you can take unlimited photos but how many of those were printed?

If you want to travel back to the '90s, let's go Generation Y Cafe and sit back and relax and reminisce. The music they played then reminds how old I am lol! Songs by Boys II Men, Kci and Jojo, Blackstreet Boys, Marc Dorsey, Bonethugs N Harmony, etc brought eargasm. What a great time to be alive!

Makapamiss met dagita nga pabuya nga cartoons idi hehehe

Haha!

howdy tonight @leeart! things from the 90's are antiques? man that makes me feel old! lol. very unique restaurant and a great review! I'd sure go there!

Just my personal view haha!

howdy today @leeart! hey the review was very good, you could work as a restaurant critic!

Thanks @janton! That would be a good idea :)

and I think you would be very good at it, think of all the great food you would have!

Awww. Kayat ko daytuy!!

Thanks as always @c-squared for the support!

I found this on @c-squared, what an amazing trip down memory lane!

Dragonball Z, Super Nintendo, yo-yos, Savage Garden!!!! These things are triggering my memories! Thank you for this visit into my own brain, and for showing us this very unique dining experience :)

I know a lot of us can relate to this. Come out, come out lol!

I really am impressed with the concept of designing the place.

Me too! To certain people, perhaps my parents, a lot of this would be or has been junk!

But put it together, nicely organized, a few years later, and it is conceptual art at its finest, coupled with a dining experience! Woah!
