#ulog ~ 8 ~ Our Poor Penned Chickens & A Couple of Cool Wild Animal Experiences

in ulog •  7 years ago  (edited)

It's Been A While Since I Featured the Flock

@PhoenixWren was saying the other day how atrocious it was that I did a tour of our gardens and didn't show the #chickenbitchez. It's so sad photographing them in their run, even though as you will see, we try to keep it as interesting as possible in there for them. I miss the free ranging photo shoots, but with our young plants all around the girls have to stay in their run for a few months more.

How dare you keep us off the STEEM blockchain for over 2 weeks!

Ways to Keep Chickens Happy in Their Run

IMG_7637.JPG

Straw, straw and more straw. They absolutely love the stuff and can be kept happy and scratching for food all day long. I give them fresh straw every couple of days, and every morning I give them chicken scratch. I throw it in the straw and just watch em go. They get so excited for food, and searching for it, it's definitely a great way to keep them contented in the summer.

Giving Them A Good Variety of Treats

Chickens are only supposed to have 10% of their daily food be human food. Today I gave them some expired plain yogurt (yes, they love this so much and it's really good for them). They also ate more than a couple grubs that I found while planting potatoes. Their all time favourite food though is the pieces of sandwiches that the boys don't eat. The girls fight like crazy over sandwiches.

Chickens Love Weed!

Ba hahaha, did I say weed? I meant weeds...chickens love weeds :) They've eaten every possible green thing in their chicken run, and love fresh greens so much. We're happy to provide those greens, and all just by doing much needed weeding.

My best gardening partners, Kiedis and Stryder. Man did we ever get this future potato patch weeded quickly.

Once the bucket is full it's time to bring it to the girls.

The chickens have a lot of fun scratching through the roots of the weeds, they often find worms and other small bugs. This keeps them happy as long as the fresh, buggy greens keep coming. Once the sun has been on the weeds for a while and the chickens have scratched them all around, they lose interest.

Some Cool Wild Animal Experiences

The animal world has been speaking to me loudly. I have encounters every day with animals, yet it's usually small and quiet nudging. I was on my deck when all of the sudden two deer bolt from across the road into our yard going into the forest by the chicken coop. I haven't seen any deer since last year, they don't hang out in our area very much which is good for my gardens but sad because they are so graceful, noble and majestic. When I thought the fun was over all of the sudden one of the deer comes bolting back out of our yard, and clop clop clopped across the road back where she came from. Was the other deer being escorted to safety? I will never know...yet I do know that there is a message in this for me.

My next experience happened when I was inside the house. I heard the chickens just start going crazy making their pissed off chicken noises...and I swear I could hear a duck quacking...I went outside...

Chickens do love weed(s) lol. Little ones start getting handfuls and put it in a bucket for the girls. I guess we are just days apart in posting how we take care of them! The deers know we don't hurt them so they hang out in our backyard forest...

i must be part chicken.. #Iloveweed

Come on down Dave, we got the finest in all the lands hehehe...

These animal encounters are so cool. The only animals that have come to visit lately are box turtle in varying sizes and tree frogs.

I'm glad my friends are okay...
But I'm afraid because the enemies are sending reconnaissance planes over them... You must provide them with protection... hehehe
... have a nice day dear @lyndsaybowes

LOL!!!! Thank you for the belly laugh there @yagoub :) :) :)

You don't have time for laughter... Because chickens are in danger... xexexe

They really do not like ducks....!

Uemm;)) look at your cock again, glad to see smookie again, he's still a handsome rooster .. nice day @lyndsaybowes

Thank you for stopping by to visit our flock :) I hope you are feeling well lately @au7ia?

Ooh thanks @lyndsaybowes, this end i'm too busy ..;)))
..I also hope you are always healthy there .. greetings to your family :D

Ok. Wow and more Wow. So here is our experience. When we pulled up to my mother's house on Friday night two bunnies were sitting in the front garden, just waiting for me. The next morning they were back. Then we noticed on the porch light by the front door. A robin's nest and we heard little peeping inside. Stephanie took a picture from a ladder and inside were 3 or 4 little baby robins. All day long mommy and daddy robin few back and forth with a worm in their mouth, sitting on the roof, waiting for the coast to be clear to feed the babies. Wow eh. I am waiting to find out my message. Actually I think it was Mother Natures way of saying Happy Birthday and to tell me to chill out and not work quite so very hard. :)))

Awww, yeah!! Thanks for sharing with me...your experiences are soooooooo cute!!! Yes, innocence...new life, rebirth...and Happy Birthday!!

Thank you. we are watching those Robins all morning. Mommy and Daddy are feeding them. Back and forth, and back and forth. We are not using the front door. We want them to grow big and strong.

but sad because they are so graceful, noble and majestic.

We have a large wooded area in the back of our house and property and even though we live in a neighborhood, it makes it feel much wilder than it is in reality.

One of my wife's favorite things is watching deer come into our yard from the wood line everyday to forage for food. She has a studio/sunroom/closet off of our bedroom that has floor to ceiling windows along the back side open to the woods and backyard. I even bought her a deer feeder for mother's day and she said it was one of the best presents I ever got her...lol

Oooh wow that's so great you found a way to be in nature even though you are in the suburbs! Is a deer feeder like a salt lick or something?

Nothing but the best for my Queen! lol It is a corn feeder than has a battery powered timer that distributes corn twice a day with a spinning flange at the bottom of the barrel. I wanted to paint it Tiffany Blue or Rose Gold..lol but lacked the time and skill!

Wow, that's fancy! Beats the hell out of a salt lick lmao!!

@lyndsaybowes, Nice to see you #chickenbitches again after some longer time. You most thinking about chicken's feed always. Then you decided to giving good variety of treats. Chickens most love to eat weeds. I never seen they ate Straw in my country.

Oh they don't eat straw, the straw is for them to scratch through, so they have fun looking for the food inside the straw, rather than just throw the food onto the dirt.

Oh... Sorry for the misunderstand.

It's okay, I am more than happy to clarify!

Wao your chickens if they have surprised me !!! I've never seen chicken eating grated chicken, let alone yogurt ... wao really surprised me. I love your cock is beautiful, the tail is beautiful.

Chickens can eat everything a human can eat, and more :) :) :)

Hooray for seeing the chickens again! They look pretty content in that nice big airy run to me. I need to do better at giving mine that kind of entertainment!

Yes, they are very spoiled #chickenbitchez hahahaa!!

Great to their keeping well! Animals are sure giving you some sorta message. Do that meditation and find the message and what the duck represents, I don't have it in my book sorry 💯🐒

Yes, I feel it is speaking to me of joy, lightheartedness...and as always, being in the moment...don't sweat the small things, be random, be spontaneous...alive...

Sure thing very wise advice from it 💯🐒

Well, Lyndasay I can feel that Mr. Pendock is rocking all the way and girls are just following that Sober Guy. Some wonderful feelings though :P

Mr. Pendock is the King that's for sure... :D

That's a nice coop and run. Is some of that metal framing? (The Red stuff)

It's actually made of wood, my husband decided to paint it that awesome red colour! I love it too :)

That's what I call chicken free range !
And it's a very nice #ulog about your life, of course
Best regards
Tom

My chickens like some weeds too. I get lots of small brambles popping up and I given them those. They also had some of the strawberries the snails and slugs got to.
