Primary school is the most basic level in formal education in Indonesia. Primary school is taken within 6 years, ranging from grade 1 to grade 6. Currently grade 6 students are required to follow the National Exam (Ebtanas) which affects students' graduation. Primary school graduates can continue their education to junior secondary level.
Primary school students are generally 6-12 years old. In Indonesia, every citizen aged 6-15 years must attend primary education, namely primary school (or equivalent) 6 years and junior high school (or equivalent) 3 years.
Primary schools are run by both government and private. Since the enactment of regional autonomy in 2001, the management of public primary schools (SDN) in Indonesia previously under the Ministry of National Education, is now the responsibility of the local government of the regency / city. While the Ministry of National Education only acts as a regulator in the field of national education standards. Structurally, the state primary school is the technical implementation unit of the kabupaten / kota education office.
