Morning Walkies
He’s no rooster and fortunately it’s not the crack of dawn, but the wake-up call in our household is the raspy old dog bark by Sammy our 13 year old Black Lab. He has us all trained and he knows it. It’s just one well sounded woof to do the job. Actually it’s not really a woof, he doesn’t quite do those any more. His bark sounds more mechanical, like a fan becoming seized and grinding to a stop.
If I can respond fast enough, before Sheila and the other two pups rouse, then I can get the coffee started. Because once Sheila is up, the process of “Morning Walkies” is set into motion. There’s not doddling, no fooling around! This ain’t no disco! For Sheila it’s all about getting those puppies suited up and heading on out.
This morning I had just enough time to get the coffee made before we headed on our walk. And if you speak doggie it’s called “walkies”. For some reason that word seems to get them more excited, not that they need to be more excited. Mornings are always extra special because there’s always more stuff to smell and more territory to reclaim. Who knows what strangers roamed around during the night.
We all head out together. As chaotic as that might be, it in no way compares to the drama that ensues attempting to take one or two out separately.
I take the boys, Sammy and Ozzie. Sammy leads the way.
Sheila takes Lola.
This bush is always our first stop. It needs to be claimed for the day.
From there, it's decision time. Either we head down the hill to the right and head to the river.
Or head to the right and to the dog park. Sammy is the one who chooses. Ozzie would always choose the dog park.
This morning it's off to the dog park.
There's lots to see this way too. Sammy discovers that someone was at this rock last night.
The boys spread out to make sure nothing gets missed.
Sammy finds something in the shrubs
Heading up the hill
Sheila is all about getting the walk done and heading back for coffee. Poor Lola doesn't get a chance to snuff much.
That's them, way ahead of us, up the road.
We head to the dog park
While Sheila and Lola pose for a photo on their way back
At the park Sammy surveys the grounds
While Ozzie takes care of business
Ozzie finds his ball and game's on!
Almost had it
Keep your eye on the ball
Flying catch
I got this one!
The chase is on
Ozzie is a retriever
Meanwhile Sammy is still sniffing around
This place was a working apple orchard at one time. Nature is now reclaiming the land.
Apples still grow on the trees. How many can you find?
We walk back through the field of clovers
Then down to the service road
The boys try to lead me into the poison ivy!
Some Queen Anne Lace along the way
As we go by Alan's trailer, the boys check to see if he is up and about. When Alan is around he always has treats for them.
We're home and Ozzie is ready to go in!
Sammy needs a little motivation to get up the steps.
I'm ready for some coffee!
Another successful morning walkie is in the books!

I love this! I feel like I took a walk with you.
At our house, we don't do walkies. The pig won't go outside. But I get up, feed her, make the coffee, then she takes a nap and I go to work. So, I guess I walk. She just lays around and eats like a pig.

You make me laugh! I can't believe your pig won't walk with you! I never had a pig, but I heard that they are really smart! It sounds like she has you trained well!

Lady Montague is very smart, but she's never been outside. She just doesn't know what she's missing.

Walkies does the trick every time, jackets on, into the back of our "bakkie" light delivery van I think you call it over there Roger, down to the beach or park. Magical word, cannot be retracted not even if you forgot to pee, you said that word.... keep moving.
Checking their surroundings like something had visited overnight, must have been a wild cat/neighbours cat taking a short cut through your garden.
Yes they definitely keep you on your toes, watch your words around them @rwedegis thanks for sharing your and @swedegis walking the dogs.

They know all the words and phrases. "Is it time?" "Are you ready?" "out?" and all the gestures. Like putting my shoes or hat on. Or going near the cabinet were we keep their leads. Thank you for your comments, Joan!

Looks like a fantastic morning routine--much better than waking up in the middle of a concrete jungle!

What a wonderful album. First picture of the dogs got me. Both dogs are adorable. I like the photos especially where the dogs are together. You can tell they're chums.
Thanks for a nice interlude. I'm off now to babysit for two equally rambunctious and delightful dogs.
