Hello guys! I was 12 years old when I saw this movie on HBO at my grandmother's house. At first, I thought it was just a movie about two sisters who loved each other so much that they were willing to sacrifice their happiness, comfort, (innocence?) and well-being just to make sure that the other sister would have a better shot at life - a pure love that was tested by time, distance, and oblivion. I have sister's myself, and I know that such a bond is so strong, and I can totally relate to Nettie when she said, "Only death can keep us apart!"

As I was growing up, this movie kept coming back to my memory, and every time I think about it, I look at it in a fresh new light. I remember a time during sociology class when we were discussing patriarchal society, and from out of nowhere, vivid parts of this movie flashed back in my memory and thereupon sprang a strong and compelling disgust towards patriarchy.

This movie has moved me and made me contemplate countless times, and influenced me to value women empowerment. This movie made me vow to myself that I should never hesitate to speak my mind when the situation calls for, that I will always stand on my feet, that I will fight literally and figuratively when needed to defend my dignity, strive to be independent at all times, and to NEVER accept anything less than quality.

I still get emotional whenever I remember Celie's plight - the abuse, the abortions, the feelings of helplessness and worthlessness, the separation from her sister, the only person who ever truly loved her, the unrequited love - I cried for her when I was 12 years old. I cried a bucket of tears. I cried for her lost innocence and her lack of freedom. I cried when Nettie was departing and she was calling out for her, with her arms stretched out, trying to fight the distance that was slowly growing between them. I still cry for her whenever little bits of memory flashback, or when I encounter situations even with the slight resemblance to hers.

I cry because there is still a Celie out there in today's society, who is struggling to write her letters to God with her last ounce of hope.
