Ulog: 6 Home from the trip. Are we all just panhandlers now?

Random thoughts from the trip

  • I'm so glad I live in a rural area. City life would get me down. All that traffic! All that construction! All that noise! All those panhandlers!
    • I lived in Reno, Nevada for awhile. There was this panhandler who made the newspaper. He worked an exit going to a ritzy casino about noon to 6pm. Then he would go across the street to get in his Cadillac to drive to his $250k home. Not a bad life?
      • We don't have panhandlers here in any of the small towns around me, but St. Louis had a LOT of them in the downtown area where we stayed. Every time I saw one I thought of Steemit. Sure our signs (posts) might look a bit fancier than theirs, but aren't we all just hoping for someone to throw some spare change in our cup (upvote us)?
Most of us aren't homeless, while most of them at least said they were...
Some of them were obviously buzzed out of their mind, most of us aren't... Although there have been a few posts I've read that might have been written at least partially buzzed... haha!!!
Anyway, I thought about Steemit every time I saw a panhandler. ::shrug::

Checking the garden

Oops this is not a cushaw squash like I thought. This is just a striped zucchini. Oh well, they are very good! Also got another yellow crookneck squash.

The Hungarian peppers have survived having their leaves eaten by rabbits and are producing. These 2 are close to harvest... Anxious to see how much heat if any they have!

Also harvested our first beet.
The wife is super excited about that!

  • The other peppers are producing. Jalapenos, bell...
    • My maters are looking pretty good. I had hoped to have a few cherry tomatoes ripe when we got home, but they are still green. It surely won't be long now.
      • Some of the corn is starting to tassle.
    • Tons of blooms on the squash, cantaloupe and watermelon.
  • Nice cabbage heads. Cauliflower is probably ready. Lots of broccoli side shoots to harvest.

Just a bit too wore out from the trip to do much there...

What's coming up?

The boss called and wants to switch with me for the weekend. I'll work so he can go to the Goodies Car show in Duh Moines.

  • Our little town of 83 is having their fireworks Saturday.
  • Get to see my grandson again. He'll probably spend the night Saturday after the fireworks...

We enjoyed the motel, but it's going to be good to sleep in our own bed tonight!

Here in the northwest, between the major metropolitan areas like Portland and Seattle, the homeless and/or panhandling population is an ongoing concern, mainly because those cities are doing their level best to encourage the activities. It's difficult to lump everyone into the same category of able bodied or mentally capable, but drugs and alcohol do play some role for a lot of them, and it's hard to tell the difference from afar.

I've lived in mostly rural communities all my life. The few times I haven't I felt way too much stress. Just getting from place to place, as you mention, makes whatever convenience there might be not so worth it. I'd rather travel a few miles to get to a store or order something off of Amazon than battle my way through traffic to a store that's wall to wall shoppers.

Looks like your garden is coming right along. Our main crop right now are the blueberries, the onions and some peppers. Tomatoes are growing and starting to flower and I'm not sure what type of squash is out there (it actually might be a zucchini), but it's got a big old yellow bloom on it.

Strawberries are pretty much done.

We've had some cooler weather lately, with a drizzle here and there. Not sure what that will do for the crops, but it probably helps to have some cooling off instead of blazing heat. Just don't want growth stunted if we can avoid it. :)

Are you sure those are hot peppers and not sweet ones? I'll make bread out of all extra zucchini those make the best ever homemade bread. I'll even try one loaf of the squash you know how I like to experiment after all in the same family as zucchini.
