The clock can be a heartless creature in an ultra-never stopping, the minutes ticking by relentlessly. 24 hours can seem to go on forever, especially when those hours involve circling a quarter mile track. A long time ago when I was in college the idea of running 24 hours wasn't such a stretch. So for 24 hours from June 6 - 7, 1981 I circled the track 508 times, plus 1219 feet for a total of 126 miles and change - an effort that earned me 3rd place and ranked me as 9th best that year. Memories of that day are: wondering if we should get of the track when thunderstorms approached (we didn't!), waking up my dad as I approached the 100 mile point since I was so excited, being so sore towards the end it was easier just to walk the last few hours (don't think about sitting down in the porta-potty as getting back up was torture, and maintaining good nutrition by eating half a cheese cake, a dozen or so donuts and a big pack of fig newtons. Now in my senior years I can look back and be amazed with my effort and it gives me the motivation to get out there and do it again. Nothing is impossible in ultras.

Wish the training was as easy now as it was back then. This old body takes awile to get back in shape. But age group competition won't be as tough.
