According to the UN refugee agency, for the first time, more than 100 million people are fleeing the world. The Ukrainian war contributed significantly to the record numbers.
According to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), more than one per cent of the world's population is currently fleeing. This record high was decisively contributed by the war in Ukraine, which led to a dramatic increase in the number of displaced people worldwide.
"For the first time in history, the number of people forced to flee conflict, violence, human rights abuses and persecution has surpassed the staggering 100 million mark," the UN refugee agency said.
UNHCR chief: 'The alarm bells must be sounded':
"This is a record that should never be achieved," said UNHCR chief Filippo Grandi. "This must be a wake-up call to resolve and prevent destructive conflicts, end persecution and address the causes that force innocents to flee.
According to the United Nations, the number of displaced people globally has risen to 90 million by the end of 2021. Conflicts in Ethiopia, Burkina Faso, Myanmar, Nigeria, Afghanistan and the Democratic Republic of Congo are responsible.
Six million flee Ukraine:
Plus, there's a war in Ukraine right now, the UNHCR said. "Eight million people have been displaced in the country this year, and more than six million refugee movements from Ukraine have been registered.
