Advantages of wisdom: Discretion will protect you; understanding will watch over you. Proverbs 2:11

He who seeks wisdom seeks a hidden treasure as Jesus taught in one of his famous parables about the Kingdom of God, and this spiritual treasure brings with it blessings, advantages, and benefits. And this is so because the spiritual path to wisdom begins with the gift of fear of God (constancy, firmness, devotion, and equanimity), and when this fear, which is the way, the truth, and the life, is completed in the heart, that is when, by the grace of God, that heart perfected by the sacred listening is born, which is in practical terms means wisdom, understanding, and spiritual discernment.
And an example of this teaching was when Solomon, after being crowned, asked in Gibeon for a heart that knows how to listen, and for this request God granted the King longevity, happiness, glory, and unimaginable riches. Solomon found the hidden treasure and the pearl of great price and was greatly blessed.
Wisdom then presents itself to men as an excellence of the creator of all things that must be sought and valued, and this is why sapiential books such as the Book of Proverbs teach so many things about this gift. It is for all this that the Book of Proverbs, before listing its famous sayings, describes how beneficial wisdom is for those who seek it with a heart devoted to God and intelligently affirms the following:
"Discretion will protect you;
understanding will watch over you,
delivering you from the way of evil,
from men who speak perverse things" Proverbs 2:11-12.
He who finds wisdom finds the true path, and does not fall victim to the appearances that deceive reason and the passing passions that divide the mind, explains the Book of Proverbs. Understanding, which is a special knowledge of things and reality, together with discretion, which is essentially a form of common sense, are a spiritual shield for those who have them. Examples of this were David and Hezekiah who, due to various circumstances, had to face better armed and more physically powerful enemies and yet, thanks to these gifts, they emerged victorious.
