Flash Flood, but we were prepared!

I've been warning people for a month that this spring would be flooding.  The amount of snow that we got, the fact that it did not start melting until so late into the year and the sudden warm temperatures has brought on the melt - big time!

Here is a comparison between spring last year and what our yard looks like late this afternoon.  This is not over as there is still a LOT of snow yet to melt, over 6 inches in some places.

The dugout was dry last year so we ended up with a bumper crop of dandelions.  We will need a lot of dry weather to get the same crop this year. The snow melted so fast that we literally had a flash flood.  I've never experienced anything like this.  It was an astounding experience.  I came home about 4:30pm from helping the neighbour.  The county road was dry and there was a little bit of water flowing into our dugout.

At about 6:30pm, two hours later, we had 50-75 feet of county road covered by water on both sides of our drive way.

I built a bridge to span the ditch in our yard so that we can get to the greenhouse, especially when there was water flowing in the spring or during storms.  I think I need to raise it up and make it longer!  Here is a picture of my bridge within the span of two hours.

What people don't realize is that a natural forest can hold a LOT of water.  Even during the summer they say that there is at least an inch of water in the forest floor, making it an inland ocean.  Forests also control flooding because of their capacity to hold water.  One of the reasons we experience floods now is due to all the trees that people have cleared off the land.  We choose to leave them all in place so that they can fulfill their purpose.

This water is about 6-10 inches deep in some places. The water is moving slowly through the bush making it look like a Florida swamp.

We have never seen water like this before but we were okay.  We actually planned for an event like this when we dug the dugout, trenched the ditch and laid out the yard before we built.  The very first spring we were out here I made sure to watch the water and I learned a lot by watching and observing it's flow.  I wanted to make sure we could easily manage flooding so that we don't end up with water in the Earthship.  Our due diligence and planning has paid off.

The only problem we have is that there is lots of water in the greenhouse, so I'm not sure how we are going to fix that until all this water goes down.  But our plants are safe as they are all still in the Earthship.  So our gardens are not in jeopardy as a result of this flood.  I cannot say that for the people in the area as there is a lot of flooding going on in the province right now.  For us, we are A-okay!

This water is sacred and it is rejuvenating the land.  I love it and I could feel its power!  Amazing experience.

Beautiful but yet sad. The seasons and earth is changing and your post proves it. Wow

I don't find this sad at all. This is life where we live. This is Mother Earth rejuvenating the land and it is up to us to go with the flow! (pun intended). Mother Earth is always changing and I think it is crazy to think that we can control her. That is not our job here as stewards. Wow indeed eh! Good news, the water level dropped by two inches last night as it froze. That stopped the melt to allow for our water system to catch up. We will see if it goes back up today when the melt resumes. I love this time of year!

What a pleasant surprise. To sit down and connect like this! That's awesome. What a lot of water. Is there much more to melt? Been thinking of you guys today. I am beginning to obsess about converting sections and sections back to wild! It's so inspiring to think about planning something like that! Glad you're all set-up. Pays to have a plan. Blessings & peace to you.

We have about 6 inches of snow yet in the bush and 4-5 inches on the ground. All that snow is absolutely water logged. So tomorrow is going to be interesting as now the dugout is full and the rest of the snow should go in short order. But we should be okay. I'm very grateful that we worked all this out years ago. Makes this enjoyable rather than stressful. I actually had fun watching it all unfold.

Must gave been pretty awesome. Such warm temperatures today. I hope you're faring well!!

The water dropped 3 inches over night and came back up one. So we are through the worst of it. It was spectacular. What an awesome experience to witness. We are doing great. No damage. All governed appropriately!

Very Good! VG!! Very very good. Good! Good! Good!! 🌸🐛 hahaha, awesome!!

hahaha. <3 I just put down some tobacco in the water to acknowledge its sacredness and thanking it for rejuvenating the land and blessing us.

As you would 💜💙💚💛❤😁🙌
Always tobacco & smudge. I saw a meme earlier this week 'smudge, don't judge' hahaha! I smudged a lot this past week!!

I pray every day for the waters. 💙💙💙

This is not look good , i hope everybody is ok out there , you guys need to take some actions to make sure it's will not happen again next year

This is Mother Earth rejuvenating the land. No damage. Flooding was contained. All is good. Remedies already worked out, so nothing more for us to do.

Wow. It almost looked as though an heavy rain fell. Not knowing is the snow that is just melting. Such magnificent happenings

We've had torrential downpours in the past, but they just cannot dump this much water. This is astounding as we have over 6 months of snow melting in the span of a few days. So that would make any storm look like a dribble.

Wow, that's incredible to see how the rapid snow melt can have this kind of influence on ones habitat! I can imagine you must be feeling real good about taking the time to observe the hydrology of your particular location before building so you could use that information to construct wisely. Thanks for sharing your experience and your healthy attitude towards these kind of natural processes. Many folks are living in fear of nature and perceiving these processes as a terrible threat. It's so important for us to see the benefit they hold so we can know how to best take advantage of these processes and create prosperity.

I must admit that I had some doubts, but it all worked out well. I am very grateful that I took the time and trusted Mother Earth. By taking time to listen, we can work through it all. It is when we don't listen that we get into a lot of trouble. Thank you for acknowledging that aspect of our work. I'm grateful that you were able to 'see' that. We go with the flow and it works out very well.

I am happy to hear that you planned well in advance for flooding. We have done the same. The house is on higher ground and I have drainage all around. Being flooded out is no fun. We need water here. Could you send some our way? I love to see rain and water. It is what gives life to our land.

I will do what I can to send you an order of rain. Give it a week. Me and the big guy are tight, so I'll see what I can do for you. lol ;)

I appreciate that! lol
