The news headline said that the UN voted overwhelmingly against Russia's invasion of Ukraine. But read closely, and it appears that countries represesenting less than half the world actually voted that way. About as many people are represented by countries that abstained, not mentioning those that did not vote, or voted with Russia.
The details are interesting.
China abstained, but did not vote FOR Russia. What does that mean? Also, as I have pointed out, Chinese internal media has highlighted the human-interest side of the invasion, the suffering.
India also abstained, as did its enemy, Pakistan. How often do those two agree on anything? This is troubling. India has historical ties to Russia and the USSR, as do several other former client-states on the list, like Laos.
None of the "Stans," the former Soviet states in the south of the old USSR, voted to condemn Russia. Apparently only Georgia, and not Armenia, did. How much of that is fear or self-interest? But Russians still, i think, have a lot of power in those states, too.
Eritrea actually voted with Russia. Ethiopia, it's neighbor and formerly its master, did not vote. Maybe it's too busy with Tigray.
So the world is not as united in its disgust for Putin's attack as it appeared on the surface. India is a big disappointment, justifying its cowardice with chatter about remaining neutral between the disputing parties, as if a rape were a lovers' quarrel. But maybe they are right in the suggestion that this puts them in a better position to help negotiate, down the road.
