Decriminalize Illicit Drugs to Stop Funding Drug Cartels

Newsweek: Is Cancun Safe? 14 Killed in Brutal Crime Spree at Mexican Resort Town

#unpopularopinion #endthedrugwar ... Only reason these backwater thugs (the drug lords who fund this violence) are filthy rich is because we've created a system by which they can make a killing trafficking illicit drugs into the US. Decrminalizing drugs would severely cut into their profits.

We're 40 years into the so-called "war on drugs" and drug use is the same as it was 40 years ago.

I don't support or condone drug use. Drugs destroy people and families. But our war on drugs has added to the misery as entire sections of our population are thrown in jail while other sections of the globe are plunged into daily violence of unimaginable magnitude due to the demand our approach has created.

Sometimes when you declare war, the only result is a smoking crater.

I think this is exactly right. Not only is the drug war harmful to our citizens because we take them out of society, away from their families, and out of the economy, but we are adding all of this funding for the gangs. We have found a way to simultaneously harm our own citizens for no reason and hand millions of dollars to our enemies.

I don't see how people can honestly think this policy is a good idea. We know that there were racist and political origins of the Drug War. There is no legitimate reason for it.

Exactly. Just like how prohibition made thugs like Al Capone filthy rich, the Drug War has made drug lords some of the richest people on the planet, to the point they can wage all out war against sovereign nations.

I don't support drug use, but our current policies are not working. Locking people up in cages for victimless crimes is destroying families and creating a systematic problem we can't deal with. We need to be trying to solve the problems which lead to drug abuse, not trying to beat the crap out of the drug trade.
