♥ Minimalist shoes for Kids with Sensory needs ♥

My daughter was going to quit archery. She LOVES archery!

I was quite surprised when she told me she was thinking about this. I asked her, "Why? What is it that makes you not want to go anymore? Are you tired of it? Or is something wrong?"

She was a little embarrassed, and answered that it was the shoes. You see, for archery, shoes are required. No sandals. No crocks, flip flops, or anything other than closed-toed shoes. It's for safety purposes.
My daughter wears sandals and flip flops everywhere. She ONLY uses tennis-shoes for archery.

She also struggles with anxiety. This is an issue we have been working on for a while, and in some ways it has improved, and in others, it has become more challenging.

Apparently, when she is anxious, she NEEDS to be able to wiggle her toes. Not just a little wiggle, she needs to splay and wave her monkey toes around! I did not realize this. So, when we go to archery practice, and we put her crazy toes into foot-jail, (aka shoes), it makes her anxiety that much worse. She can't focus because she is busy trying and failing to wiggle her toes inside her shoes.

After doing a lot of research, we found something that might work!! These are minimalist shoes that we found on etsy, (I'll drop a link to the seller in case anyone is interested), and we finally received them on Saturday! She tried them on, and after a little confusion trying to figure out which shoe was 'left' or 'right', she decided she LOVES them and they will be her new archery shoes, and maybe even everyday shoes!

They may look a little strange to someone who is used to regular shoes. That's okay. My daughter has her own style, and she dresses to please herself, no one else.

She picked out the color, and the seller offered to put on any kind of applique she wanted, so naturally, unicorns it was!

She says she can wiggle and splay her toes now as much as she wants, and the woolen insides are SUPER soft!

She also loves the fact that, since the soles are quite thin, she could feel the ground and grass under her feet. These shoes are designed differently than typical shoes; they are thin-soled and roomy, allowing you to flex your feet while walking and stepping naturally, which is better for your feet and back than thick-soled tennis-shoes anyway. They are custom-made, meaning you send her your exact foot measurements and she designs them especially for your unique feet.

I want to share this discovery with you all because I'm sure some of you out there may benefit from this type of shoe!

Anyone looking for an inexpensive minimalist/barefoot style shoe might like them. Parents of kids with sensory needs may also want to give these a try, for those kids who just cannot stand wearing shoes!

Here is where I found mine.

I don't get anything from recommending her, I just want to share her shop with you.

Also, if any of you are interested, my daughter came back to steemit over the weekend and made a post about these shoes and other things.

She says she has a goal of creating at least 2-3 posts a week. I hope she does! She struggles with focusing on projects for any length of time, so we will see how she does. Maybe if you guys dropped her some comments it would inspire her! ♥

Thanks for reading!! Have a lovely week, everyone! ♥

Yay to minimalist shoes! I have one and I really like it. I'm barefoot most of the time and when it's time to go to work I wear my spread-em-toes shoes.

I'm glad you found her one!

Thanks!! ♥

Homemade shoes FTW!!! Thanks for the link too.

Thanks!!
♥ :D

I loved this post for two reasons. One, you're a fellow unschooler and two, you got a sustainable pair of shoes. Kudos!

Haha awesome! Thanks!!
Love the cutie sneks! First I have heard of this curation project but I like it. Thanks for including me!
Have a great night!

Thanks for the invite and I joined the discord group. I like sneks in real life too, haha!
(My daughter made this 'dress' for her brother's snek, haha!)

Those are interesting looking shoes! I will tell my son about it as well. He and his sister both have very wide feet and when they were little, we could maybe find one kind of shoe at a specialty shoe store they could wear.
His second son has even wider feet.

Has your daughter ever tried the toe shoes? They are like gloves but for feet...

Those were some we were considering, actually! The are rather expensive though, and no one local sells them, so she couldnt try them on first. I decided to try these since they were cheaper, and then maybe the toe shoes if these didn't work out.

I am glad the ones you got are working for your daughter. Always better to support a small business - and cheaper is always a plus.

That is SO true! I love to be able to support small businesses, and this one donates a pair of shoes to children in need every time you buy a pair, so that was pretty great as well. ♥

Oooh! These are awesome! My daughter lives in her flip flops and fuzzy crocs. At first I thought these were those toddler crib shoes, but custom made? That's awesome! I think I'll be looking into these! Thanks so very much for sharing!!

Also, my kids have a joint account @crowbarkids and my oldest has her own @Tonks. I'll have them follow your daughter although we haven't had time to get their posts up in some time. We've got some catching up to do so hopefully we'll get around to it this week!

Haha, when I saw them online that's what they reminded me of! Baby shoes!
Glad you enjoyed!
Ill let my daughter know and Im sure she will follow your kids too when she gets back on here! We have had a crazy couple of days here and neither one of us has had time to get on steemit!

It's so hard to keep up with my own account, much less both kids' accounts! Anyway, she got some Crowbar Love!

WHat a great solution so light its like being bare feet but meeting the need for still doing archery and they look so cool

Thanks! Yes, they are supposed to be very much like barefeet, and she LOVES that!
Now she can shoot without worrying about her monkey toes. ;)

I love them. Good for you, good for your daughter.

I wear shoes as little as possible. Not that I am particularly needy of bare feet, just prefer them.

Thanks for a great find. Makes me happy because they make your daughter happy!

Thanks!
They make me happy because she is happy too, haha!
I love going barefoot too. Unfortunately I cant do it a lot here because we have free-range chickens that leave 'presents' everywhere, so for sanitary purposes, we have to barefoot elsewhere...

I think those shoes are pretty neat! I can understand where she is coming from with the feet thing. I’m not sure if it’s anxiety induced (although I did deal with anxiety a lot growing up) but sometimes if my feet feel too constricted, I start to feel claustrophobic and it drives me nuts!

Thanks!
It may be connected, who knows... She is REALLY struggling with the anxiety as she grows, and we are step by step trying to deal with it. It baffles me because we live a super stable life and all our relationships are great. Its not like we live in a household filled with strife or instability, so I have no idea where this all stems from. We are just dealing as best we can and I am trying to have LOTS of patience!
At least we have conquered the toe-wiggling issue!

Sometimes it just happens! I know for me, what triggers the anxiety are situations where I worry how others will perceive me or situations that require a strict time schedule.
So for example, when I was on the way to my cousin’s baby shower by myself, I could feel the anxiety building up. I knew that deep down, I was nervous about where I was going to sit and are people going to look at me strange (shallow, I know, but that’s what public school does to a person!) Anyways, I knew what was causing the anxiety and I was able to work through it. Even though I know what causes the anxiety, it’s just not something that I can stop in it’s track. But I can realize what’s going on and work through it without letting it control me.
Well, that’s my story! Maybe there’s something in there that can be of help!

Thank you! It is helpful. I get nervous about things, but no where near the extent of crippling anxiety she gets, and not about the same things.
Its hard to understand sometimes, and difficult to work through. It does help to hear others' points of view and gain a better understanding. I just want to help her manage this. ♥

Good job Mama on finding a solution for your daughter that works!! I love how your worked hard to get what she needed so she can continue to do what she loved. I also love when you said she doesn’t dress to please anyone but herself!! That’s awesome, kudos to her for having her own style and not caring what others may think. This is what I try to encourage for my kids...don’t focus on what everyone else thinks or feels...focus on what you like and feel!! The shoes look very comfortable too! 💜

Thanks for the compliments! I try my best to be a good mama. Many days I fall short, but we have to keep on trying. ♥
Yes, one of the benefits of homeschooling is they arent in a class of kids all teasing eachother about every little thing, (you homeschool, so I know you already know this lol), and she is quite confident wearing all sorts of crazy things, which is fine by me. ;)

Absolutely! That’s all we can do is our best as parents!

Oh yes, I know homeschooling does help with our kids confidence and being able to be themselves because of no pure pressure. I love it! 🧡

♥♥♥

So glad you found something that works for her! Those shoes look pretty nifty too! :)

Thanks! I am happy and so is she! ♥

Love those shoes - I hope they work out well for your daughter!

Thanks!! She has archery this weekend, so we will get them in action. She has been wearing them around the house a lot and loves them.

GREAT post! I used to work with a young girl who had sensory and tactile issues. These are a fabulous idea for kids to wear.

You have a minor misspelling in the following sentence:

These are minimalist shoes that we found on etsy, (I'll drop a link to the seller in case anyone is interested), and we finally recieved them on Saturday!
It should be received instead of recieved.

Well, that was quick, grammarnazi!
Thanks, I fixed it. :D
