Challenging climate alarmists.

I have been reading Unsettled by Steven Koonin.

It should be mandatory reading for anyone who wants to know about climate science. It is well written, but rather detailed, so his shorter editorial writings may have to suffice for many.

It is impossible to overstate the deep pathology with current climate policy. The disconnect from what the science actually says could hardly be greater. Koonin shows this in every case - temperature extremes, droughts, floods, seal levels, storms, fires and related climate deaths, agricultural disasters, and, most important, the overall cost of climate change. There is absolutely zero support for apocalypse in any of these dimensions.

But perhaps the most troubling is the last mentioned, the overall cost of climate change. Using data provided by the climate science people themselves, the UN and the US government, and for an implausibly dire scenario, he shows the that overall cost estimate of doing nothing about climate change going forward, from 1930 until 2100, is less than 3% of GDP, roughly two years of GDP growth, over the entire period. This is miniscule, and, something he does not note, is magnitudes less than the cost of implementing the climate policy agenda of the alarmists, and even of the "moderates". In fact the cost of any climate policy mandates will exceed this upwardly biased estimate of the damage. Further, my friend who is familiar with Koonin's work and has examined the government report on which the economic cost estimate is based, tells me:

"On the size of the harm, although he [Koonin] knew it was small, he was still off by a factor of 5 or 10 [!!!] because he was fooled by a deceptive chart in the government study."

In other words the harm is indistinguishingly different from zero using the official highly suspicious numbers - leaving aside all of the multiple problems of the numbers themselves.

Understand that this "cost" does not refer only to the so-called monetary "cost". It is an estimate of the monetary value of all the consequences of climate change. Consider all the hype, the anguish, the divisiveness, the resource waste produced by this non-issue!
