Understanding the concept of depth and breadth

For the purpose of our discussion tonight, I will define both words

BREADTH : This is the extent or measure of how broad or wide something is.
OR
It is can be defined as a Scope or range of a thing , especially of knowledge or skill.

DEPTH: This is the deepest the remote or the very severe part of a concept
OR
(figuratively) The intensity, complexity, strength, seriousness or importance of an emotion, or situation..

I decided to speak on this topic on our esteemed Platform because from experience, I have realized the importance of having the right blend of Depth and Breadth depending on what you want to accomplish on in our various socio-economic activities.
We as humans always need some of each. Because Possessing only a depth of knowledge would make you an idiot savant, fantastically capable at one thing and helpless in all other matters.

So also,

Having only a breadth means you know a little about everything. But not enough to be useful at anything. There is a certain amount of depth needed for broad knowledge to be useful.

Because breadth refers to the full span of knowledge of a subject WHILE depth refers to the extent to which specific topics are focused upon,amplified and explored.
_*Why is 1 X 1 not equal to 1 + 1?*_

This is because Reproducing or Multiplying knowledge doesn't equate with adding to value.
The concept of breadth and Depth is very broad.

In big organizations, expecially the ones that are into manufacturing. They make use of this simple concept

Breadth & Depth

*_Product Breadth + Product Depth = Product Assortment_*

The product breadth is the number of product lines, while the product depth is the variety within each of those lines.

These two elements combine to make up a product assortment or merchandise mix.
For example :

Have you noticed that those who want to buy snacks from someone who has a showglass full of varieties like Egg Roll, meatpie, Donut, springroll, buns, Chinchin sells more than someone who only sells Egg roll
Now, Finding a balance between product breadth, depth, and the merchandise mix will be critical to your success if you are in business. But first, you need to understand what it all means.
Career Depth vs Career Breadth

There are some careers where it’s necessary to be a specialist, otherwise you likely wouldn’t have a career. University professors and scientific researchers come to mind; you need to be an absolute expert on a particular subject to be successful.
On the other hand, industries like consulting, breeds generalists. Consultants, especially in the early stages of their careers, work on a wide array of projects across many industries. As they become more experienced, some may focus on a particular function (such as strategy, marketing, or operations) or a specific industry (e.g. healthcare, technology, consumer packaged goods), or a function/industry combination. But overall, consultants are armed with a broad array of skills and knowledge that many take with them to executive positions at other non-consulting organizations.
If you want to start or establish a company, having breadth is a must because you have to understand all aspects of your business, including sales and marketing, product development and management, engineering, finance and accounting, human resources, and more. 😀Sure, you can outsource or hire specialists to handle many of these functions, but you must have at least a cursory level of knowledge of all of these to effectively run a company.
