Looking after your uPVC Windows- 4 Things to Do

in upvc •  6 years ago

uPVC windows are not only great aesthetically but also, much stronger than the traditional alternatives. Since they require low maintenance, what often gets overlooked is the fact that their lifespan will increase multi-fold with proper care. Although weatherproofing and repainting are activities you don’t need to indulge in if you have uPVC windows installed in your home, regular cleaning and inspection are still crucial, if keeping them new-like and increasing the lifespan is what you aim for. Below mentioned are some of the things you can do in this regard-

1) Inspecting the Window It’s always a great idea to check your uPVC windows at least twice or thrice a year for faults. Hinges and locks are that require more attention. Applying lubricants proves to be fruitful for preventing problems such as stiffening. A professional uPVC window company can be hired for inspecting and cleaning in case you want the professionals to take a look at them.

2) Cleaning the Frames Cleaning the window frames is crucial to avoid any future problems. Using a soft cloth is enough to get rid of dust, dirt, etc. To remove the cobwebs, an old brush might come in handy to loosen them or you can use a vacuum cleaner to clear everything up. For obstinate dirt patches, prepare a mixture of warm water and washing up liquid and clean the window frames with it using a soft white cloth.  Make sure to use solvent cleaners instead of harsh ammonia-based cleaners or scouring pads as they damage the uPVC material. Make it a habit to clean the frames at least twice a year.

3) Cleaning the Glass The glass must be cleaned at least once a month.  While doing so, make sure you don’t do it under direct sunlight to avoid a streaky finish. Using a damp cloth to give the glass a good rub is quite effective to remove excess dirt and dust. A traditional glass cleaner or the popular e-cloth is then to be used to give the window glass a finishing touch.

4) Other Things to Check Out For

Stiff Locks- If the window locks are stiff, spraying a lubricant will make them operate smoothly. ·

Drainage- If you find water pooling at the bottom of the window frame after a heavy downpour, chances are the drainage holes are blocked. Hence, it’s better to check the same and take apt measures. ·

Window Handles- Cleaning and oiling all the moving parts are a good move to keep the uPVC window design intact, without any traces of damage. By taking these steps, durability and longevity are ensured! So is your return on investment!
