De mortuis nil nisi bonum, Christians say, the problem is there's also another very important ethical imperative - a respect for truth and a balanced portrayal. And there's absolutely no justice in eulogising John McCain, which has been something I noticed happening on a large scale even in (surprisingly) European social and traditional media. It's fair to put this record straight, since that doesn't seem to be happening from other channels.
The reality for anyone who has been following international politics is that John McCain was no altruistic man of the people. In fact, he was a weapons trafficker writ large, a real life "Lord of War", who was happy to hum "bomb, bomb, bomb Iran" in front of a public on the stage and supported wars continuously and almost by default. His military career was a series of disasters from which he got out only thanks to nepotism, whereas in politics his track record shows lifetime support for deregulated finance and supporting fraudsters such as Charlie Keating.
Let's leave the dead rest in peace - but please, let's save the praise for those for whom it's truly due.
