A review and summary of Usain Bolt:Faster Than Lightning.Things got interesting in Chapter 3 & 4.
My Own Worst Enemy
After winning the Inter-Secondary School Boys and Girls Championships (Champs), Usain was awarded a sports scholarship to enrol in William Knibb High School. During that period his father started to support him and bought him a pair of running shoes.
In Usain's mind, he was still having fun but not serious in his running. He liked the feeling of winning but didnt think far for his future. Skipped training session and played video games ( Nintendo 64) occasionally at a store nearby this place.😂
He got upset when beaten by Keith Spence during Regional Competition. So he started to train harder and eventually got a glimpsed of Olympic after watching Michael Johnson ran the 200m. It blew his mind and he wanted to become like Michael Johnson.
Losing to Keith Spence inspired him to train harder but seeing his idol was magical. During another regional championship, Bolt already 14 years old and 6 feet 2, when the gun blasted, Keith Spence was nowhere near to Bolt. From that moment onwards, winning was a death serious habit for Usain.
Where Mere Mortals Quiver, The Superstar Becomes Excited By The Big Moment
After the championship, he qualified to represent Jamaica for the first time in CARIFTA 2001. This championship is an annual track & field event for the best of Carribean Youth to compete.
The competition held in Barbados and he got homesick🤣 due to immaturity. He got silver in 200m and the Jamaican Athletics Association saw his potential and selected him for IAAF World Youth Championship in Hungary, which freaked him out. He got no idea where was Hungary.
He was knocked out during semi final yet he didn't expect anything. Soon he trained harder and harder for the following year of the World championship, which held in Jamaica.
But soon after his coach announced his record time was on the 6th placing among the world powerhouse sprinter, he was demoralized and wanted to quit running before rhe world championship. He needed to surpass 5 other runners in order to claim rhe gold medal. He cried and told his mom his intention but toughen up after some encouragement from his family.
During the final of IAAF World Youth Championship of in 2002, he freaked out again due to the pressure. He laced up the wrong spike on the wrong foot and sitting on the starting block instead of preparing to race. After the gun shot, miracle happened, he felt like rockets were tied up on his shoes and won the gold medal for 200m.
