US Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco today announced a new initiative of the Ministry of Justice in the field of cryptocurrencies.
The "national law enforcement team in the cryptocurrency industry" will have to "strengthen" the capabilities of the Ministry of Justice in the fight against financial markets that allow cybercrime to "flourish," she said. The group will include cybersecurity and anti-money laundering specialists.
"Cryptocurrency exchanges want to be the banks of the future. We must make sure that these systems are reliable and be ready to root out abuses," Monaco said. "The main thing is to protect consumers."
Around the same time last year, the US Department of Justice published a "framework for law enforcement" in the field of cryptocurrencies. Since then, the authorities have expanded their capabilities to combat crime with the use of digital assets, including money laundering and the activities of ransomware.
At the same time, Monaco announced the launch of an initiative to monitor contractors who receive funding from the state budget and at the same time do not comply with standards in the field of cybersecurity.
