The corporatocracy has been destroying the free market for health care for over twenty years, and all the private practices are gone. There were many well orchestrated government programs that each added so much complexity and cost to running a small practice, that virtually every small private practice had to close. Many of the doctors went to work for big medical corporations, some left the field, and some of the older ones have just coasted to retirement. So now the big medical practices and insurance companies and government agencies take nearly 1 in 5 dollars of our GDP, as Karl said, but the biggest tragedy is that the doctors are not even given enough time to treat patients, and instead are taught to push dangerous drugs that are killing over 100,000 people per year when property prescribed (yes, properly prescribed - from side effects). So, we are screwed on all fronts, as Karl suggests.
