Google and its search engine are among the first places Americans check for information about politics and elections. Throughout 2024, The Associated Press and Google Trends will collaborate to provide an analysis of the most popular searches linked to the election. This will include a weekly snapshot of the subjects people are searching for across the country and in every state.
Search phrases, including those conducted in multiple languages, are put together into broad topics. The term "economy" include terms like "economic growth" and "GDP." Track the patterns over time to learn what is becoming more and less visible in the eyes of American voters.
Google’s data also allows a deeper exploration of search interest, by topic, by location and by time. Pick one of each and the map will show how the topic ranked in terms of interest by state and county during any week this year.
The most searched subjects are ranked from 0 to 100, where 100 denotes the region with the most searches for a particular topic (shown in the map below) or the most searched topic (shown in the chart above). Every other county on the map is ranked according to how it stacks up against the county with the greatest search value. Stated otherwise, a larger circle indicates a higher volume of information searches related to that subject inside that state or county during that particular week.
