President Trump and Joe Biden have already racked up wins in less competitive states. Mr. Trump took the lead in Florida.
Polls have closed in key battlegrounds including Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin.
Democrats flipped a seat in Colorado, while Republicans picked up a seat in Alabama and Lindsey Graham, Mitch McConnell and John Cornyn won re-election. Other races remained too close to call.
Officials in several states said there will be a longer wait for ballot counting given the surge in mail-in voting.
Survey data showed Mr. Biden winning among suburban women in Georgia, but a burst pipe in the state's most populous county could delay results there.

Republican John Cornyn Holds Onto Senate Seat in Texas

Sen. John Cornyn won re-election in Texas, according to an Associated Press race call, defeating Democratic candidate and Air Force veteran MJ Hegar in an unexpectedly tight race for the three-term incumbent.

Though Mr. Cornyn was seen as the front-runner, he faced a tougher than expected contest. In the weeks before Election Day, President Trump lost ground in Texas, which he won by 9 points in 2016. Shifting demographics and population growth in the state gave hope to Democrats, who have long wanted to flip Texas.

Mr. Cornyn, running ahead of the president in polls, has tried to distance himself from Mr. Trump in recent weeks. He told the Houston Chronicle editorial board that Mr. Trump “let his guard down” on the coronavirus pandemic. A senior member of Senate GOP leadership, Mr. Cornyn also said he has tried to avoid public scuffles with the president.

“You either love him or hate him, and there’s not much in between. What I tried to do is not get into public confrontations and fights with him because, as I’ve observed, those usually don’t end too well,” Mr. Cornyn told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram editorial board in October.

The Hegar campaign saw a fundraising surge in the final weeks of the race, wiping out Mr. Cornyn’s initial advantage. She had about $6.8 million cash on hand compared to Mr. Cornyn’s $3.8 million cash on hand, according to the most recent filings.

Ms. Hegar centered her campaign on health care, frequently criticizing Mr. Cornyn for his efforts to dismantle the Affordable Care Act. Mr. Cornyn said he supports protections for people with pre-existing conditions and lowering the cost of prescription drugs.

The state also saw a competitive Senate matchup in 2018 after GOP incumbent Ted Cruz narrowly defeated former Texas congressman Beto O’Rourke, who ran an unsuccessful bid for the Democratic presidential nomination.
