The goal of this analysis is to get the overview of the 'cervantes' category results for the last 90 days (WINTER'17/18) with numbers and explore its evolution within this period.
ABOUT TAGS AND CATEGORIES: When you post, the first 'Tag' that you select is the Category the post will be recorded in. Once a post has been published on the Steemit platform, tags can be changed but the category will no change.
Mainly, in the Steemit context, the tag 'cervantes' is related to the project @cervantes: Official guild of classification in Spanish of the Steem-Guild. Its purpose is to support Hispanic authors with visibility, votes and Steem. So, this tag or category also can be seen as a tag for a community.
GLOBAL DATA | POSTS | COMMENTS | PAYOUTS |
---|---|---|---|
Ranking | 50th | 64th | 59th |
TAG: cervantes | 27,794 | 28,832 | 440,377 |
I wanted to make this analysis because, as a Spanish native speaker, this was one of the first communities I met in Steemit and I wanted to do a little more in-depth analysis of the evolution of this project for the last 90 days, for everyone that might be interested.

1. Scope of Analysis
- Dates of the analysis: 22-26.03.2018
- Timeframe of the analysed data:
WINTER'17/18 (from 20.12.2017 to 19.2.2018)
- W1 - 30 days [20DIC17- 18JAN18]
- W2 - 30 days [19JAN18-17FEB18]
- W3 - 30 days [18FEB18-19MAR18]
2. Tools
- STUDIO 3T to get data from the database SteemData in the Public MongoDB Server mongo1.steemdata.com
- Open Office to organize and sum up data and make graphs.
3. Analysis of num. of Authors, Posts, Comments, Upvotes, Payouts
3.1 WINTER'17/18 - VALUES
A total of 11684 posts were created in the 'CERVANTES' category by 3163 authors. These posts netted 291921 votes and 48322 comments and also generated a total SBD pay-out value of $51873,34.
'cervantes' category | Authors | Posts | Comments | Upvotes | Payouts |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
TOTAL | 3163 | 11684 | 48322 | 291921 | $51873,34 |
- The 6.54% of the authors created the 39,28% of the total number of posts
by creating 10 or more posts in all the period. - The 49,22% (1557) of the authors created [2 - 9] posts.
- The rest 42,51% (1408) of the authors created just 1 post.
3.2 WINTER'17/18 - RATIOS
RATIO | VALUE |
---|---|
Average total earnings per author | $16,39 |
Average SBD per post | $4,43 |
Average num. of posts per author | 3,69 |
Average num. of comments per post | 4,13 |
Average num of votes per post | 24,9 |
Comparison of the ratios with 'life' category
I wanted to compare the ratios of the Cervantes category with the LIFE category
For this I have obtained the data of the last 30 days for the category LIFE obtaining:
'life' category for the LAST 30 DAYS
AUTHORS | POSTS | COMMENTS | UPVOTES |
---|---|---|---|
15369 | 51600 | 149539 | 777717 |
Which provide the following total ratios:
'life' category | Posts/Author | Comments/Post | Uvotes/Post |
---|---|---|---|
3,35 | 2,89 | 15,07 | |
The number of posts per author are similar in both categories, however, in the 'cervantes' category the number of comments per post is 1.42 higher and the number of upvotes per post is also 1,65 higher .
3.3 [W1, W2, W3 Evolution] VALUES
Evolution on: | W1 | W2 | W3 |
---|---|---|---|
Authors | 1505 | 1776 | 901 |
Posts | 2736 | 4865 | 4083 |
Comments | 12304 | 19848 | 16170 |
Upvotes | 67581 | 103950 | 120390 |
Payouts SBD | $23512 | $18421 | $9940 |
Being W1, W2, W3 the three consecutive subperiods of 30 days of the last winter 17/18:
- In W2, respect to W1, there was an increase in number of authors, post, comments and votes, however there was a decrease in payouts of 21.6% (from $23512.16 to $18421.10)
- In W3, respect to W2, the number of authors decreased significantly although the number of posts created remained at the same level and the votes even increased.
- However, in W3 also continued the decline in payouts that could not be mitigated by greater effort employed by the 901 authors of that last period of 30 days of winter.
3.4 [W1, W2, W3 Evolution] RATIOS
RATIOS EVOLUTION | W1 | W2 | W3 |
---|---|---|---|
Average total earnings per author | $15,6 | $10,37 | $11,03 |
Average SBD per post | $8,59 | $3,78 | $2,43 |
Average num. of posts per author | 1,81 | 2,74 | 4,53 |
Average num. of comments per post | 4,49 | 4,08 | 3,96 |
Average num of votes per post | 24,7 | 21,36 | 29,48 |
Comparing the beginning of the period and its end It can be highlighted that the Average num. of posts per author has increased 250% (from 1,81 to 4,53), the Average SBD per post has been reduced considerably a value of 71,71% (from $8,59 to $2,43).
As most of the activity is carried out by the approximately 200 most active authors, we can say that they have been working harder but obtaining less rewards per post.
4. Payout distribution
Authors and curators got $51873,33 in payouts:
- $39884,89 as author rewards (in SBD and STEEM POWER)
- $11988,44 as curation rewards (in STEEM POWER)
Payout distribution among authors
- The TOP 207(6,54%) authors with the highest author rewards get 91.58% of the total SBD author rewards.
- The Top 10(0,31%) with the highest author rewards get 75,64% of the total SBD author rewards.

6. Conclusion
The cervantes tag or category is intimately related to a project and community that within Steemit appears in TOP 50/60 in number of posts, comments and payouts.
A small percentage of authors are the ones who create most of the publications and also obtain most of the author rewards.
During the last three months (winter17/18), has been reducing the number of unique authors. The number of posts has been maintained at a stable level due to the increased number of publications per author of the more active authors.
The level of Average Earnings per Author appears stable, but the Average SBD per Post has decreased substantially which is the main reason for the decrease in total rewards within the period considered in the analysis.
7. Code
SQL request to get above data from database:
SELECT author, children, created, net_votes, curator_payout_value, total_payout_value, pending_payout_value
FROM Comments (NOLOCK)
WHERE
created >= ('2017-12-20T00:00:00.000Z') and
created < ('2018-03-20T00:00:00.000Z') and
category in ('cervantes')
Thank You.
