In the event the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2018 in Las Vegas, United States, earlier this month, Vivo showcased the world's first smartphone device with a fingerprint scanner technology that integrates with the screen (in-display). At that time the device's name has not been disclosed. Later, this week, Vivo finally launched the device with the name X20 Plus UD.
Developed in collaboration with Synaptics as owner of the in-display fingerprint scanner technology, Vivo X20 Plus UD is a new variant of the X20 Plus phone that slid in September last year.
The Synaprics fingerprint scanner sensor embedded below the Vivo X20 Plus UD screen is claimed to be capable of detecting fingerprint within a few milliseconds and capable of working under a 1.5 mm thick layer, including a screen protector.
Users simply put a finger on the bottom of the phone screen where the fingerprint scanner is located, The difference from the current smartphone, the scanning process is not done on the surface of a special tool, but directly on the screen.
Compared to conventional technology, the in-display fingerprint scanner allows the phone screen to cover almost the entire bezel-less without having to move the fingerprint scanner to the back.
Vivo also claims that by incorporating the fingerprint scanner on the screen, the device will be easier to make anti-water and dust.
As summarized from The Verge, the Vivo X20 Plus UD specification includes a 6.43-inch screen (2,160 x 1,080 pixels, 18: 9 aspect ratio), Snapdragon 660 processor, 3,905 mAh processor, 4 GB RAM, 128 GB storage, and dual camera 12 megapixel on the back and a 5 megapixel selfie camera.
Vivo X20 Plus UD will begin to be marketed in China with a tag of 3.598 yuan or approximately USD 7.2 million on 1 February. Schedule of its presence in other countries outside China is still unknown.
