Description

Learn how to operate JW Modules' Grid Seq.

JW Modules have created a very nice sequencer called Grid Seq. As the name says, this is a grid sequencer, as opposed to the Fundamental SEQ-3 which is a step sequencer. The main difference in the two is that a grid sequencer allows you to move through the events in a variety of orders according to the grid. A step sequencer only allows playback forward and backward.

Looking at the Grid Seq UI shows that points on the grid can be manipulated to provide unique notes and each point can have its gate turned on or off. We will go in to more detail on its specific functionality through this tutorial.

Learn how to set tonal centered notes.

As with most sequencers, Grid Seq can send out raw Frequency Modulation signal with no tonal center. Grid Seq has a built in feature which allows you to choose a scale/mode/etc. with a tonal center for your signal. Using this will provide you with pitches assigned to a specific musical tonal center rather than just loose pitches.

Learn how to alter the direction of step playback.

At the top of the Grid Seq UI you will see four arrows with input jacks. These inputs change the direction of the playback on the grid. Connect an external clock to any of these inputs and the playback will start in that direction based on the speed of the clock. Connecting multiple inputs to these will give you a variety of combinations and directions.

Learn set gate to avoid ghost notes.

When using SEQ-3 and deselecting a gate operation on one specific step we can still hear the indicated pitch of that step as a ghost or quiet sound. Grid Seq provides us with an option to "Ignore Gate for V/OCT Out." This selection eliminates any ghost sounds. You can get this by right-clicking on the UI.
