OpenArchive: Crashes On Taking Photos With PicsArt Camera

in utopian-io •  6 years ago  (edited)

Project Information

  • Title: Utilizing picsart camera to capture photos for openarchive causes a fatal exception.

Expected behavior

I was counting on the possibility of utilizing picsart camera as an alternative medium to take pictures.

Actual behavior

Openarchive crashes when picsart camera is utilized as a medium to take photos.

How to reproduce

  • Install Picsart v9.34.1 on your device, and if you already have OpenArchive ensure its the v0.0.17 beta 5

  • Launch Openarchive and click on the floating action button at the home page to reveal several icons.

  • Click on the camera icon from the revealed icons and select picsart camera from the pop up menu.

  • Click on the big round button at the bottom of the camera window to take a shot.

  • Now click on the forward arrow to save the photo.

  • The next window should be a force closed notification, which is similar to my experience.

  • Browser/App version: v0.0.17 beta 5

  • Operating system: Android v6.0 marshmallow.

  • Device: Itel p12

I was counting on the possibility of utilizing picsart camera as an alternative medium to take pictures.

So it this a bug with openarchive, or Picsart? Your expected behavior doesn't even mention it! If this bug had any merit to it, I'm sure the expected behavior would include the name of the app in question, and not the name of a 3rd party, non open source app.

I was able to reproduce the bug on my device.
The thing is, I kept looking for apps in my devices that allowed me to use external camera app to capture images. And each and every application that allowed, gave me the option to use Picsart, and lo and behold, none of them can really use Picsart to take pictures... More than that, most of the time, Picsart itself shows me an error saying "something went wrong". Thus I conclude this is not a bug, but misuse of the apps.

Have using picsart as external camera source, in any app that allows that, ever worked? It doesn't. So, is it a problem with all the apps that allow it, or it might be a problem with Picsart? The thing is, Picsart is not open source project (It's a funded startup), so bugs found in it are not eligible for reward from Utopian.

Obviously, Openarchive app is the failing app, since it crashes during the operation.
The picsart cam works pretty well with the opensource gallery apps that I've got. One of them is Simple Gallery.

I could easily provide a recording of the apps to prove it to you.

And its no different from openarchive.

@achiron

You can provide them, it won't change my review.

Good to know!
Here's how I see it. You agree to the fact that the review had a couple of wrong entries, and your research wasn't deep enough but you wont accept it anyway.

I suggest you check it out yourself , and include it to your lengthy review.

This war against picsart is good but you have to get your facts right.

@organik, We had some contributions before where apps can't receive data from WhatsApp clearly and crashes. not sure whether it's the app wrong or the WhatsApp we couldn't make it a legit bug report. maybe the app isn't compatible with WhatsApp and can't perform, That's a missing functionality then. You are using Picsart (a whole different non-open-source project) which allows capturing pictures ( not the main functionality), and it breaks an open-source project code. We can't accept reports like that since the owner has no way to check for picsart code (non-opensource). If we start accepting reports like these we'll be gathering clutter of apps trying to make them work together and inducing crashes.
Dev might work on it for 2 days and figure out how to get picture from picsart. Maybe. But then, how many people use picsart as their default camera app? also, it might get fixed in picsart itself... If we accept this we will start getting hunder more reports with Trying to capture picture with PIcsart in ___ app crashes. which doesn't fit the profile.
Thank you for understanding.
