Automatic media download feature is very commonly seen in the applications these days and it does impact the functionality of the applications to some extent.
Same applies to this application as well. Although the PO is not very keen to implement this but I hope that he considers your suggestion in future.
A similar proposal has been submitted on the delta chat support forum but since it was not on GitHub, your proposal is valid and worthy of utopian reward.

Downvoting a post can decrease pending rewards and make it less visible. Common reasons:
