We can criticize the Uvalde PD for behaving like cowards, and they did. But, remember, they're not technically wrong.
There are no laws requiring police officers to risk their lives to protect you or your loved ones. There are, however, plenty of laws (qualified immunity) protecting them from accountability to you or your loved ones. Basically, the status quo is that we as citizens have no legal right to protection and no legal rights to recompense for abuse.
Consider that next time you support policies that disempower individuals and place more power in the hands of a state that is legally protected from shooting you but not legally obligated to take a bullet for you.
