Vagisil is a brand name for benzocaine topical, which is used as a local anaesthetic. It blocks the nerve signals on a localized area to reduce pain and irritation. It is used to reduce pain in any surface or area of the body however, Vagisil is specially formulated to reduce the pain and irritation of the vaginal walls in cases when surgical instruments are needed to be inserted like a vaginal speculum or imaging tube.

How is Vagisil used?
Vagisil is applied topically on the walls of the vagina several minutes before an examination or a medical procedure is done. It is immediately removed by douching after the procedure is over. Do not use this product on a skin area that has cuts and do not cover the area to prevent abrupt absorption of this product on the area to be treated.
What are special considerations in using Vagisil?
As mentioned overdosing of this product may likely occur when you place too much medication on the area. Prevent this by using only the prescribed amount. An overdose can cause severe life threatening effects like palpitations, seizure, slowed breathing and even coma.
Inform your doctor of any allergies to components of Vagisil or any allergies to food and drugs that may affect the action of Vagisil. This product is not recommended for pregnant women and for women who are breastfeeding. This is also not intended for very young children.
Are there side effects in using Vagisil?
Vagisil causes headaches, weakness, confusion, palpitations, light headedness, shortened breaths and discoloration of the skin, fingernails and lips. However there are mild side effects that are very common in Vagisil use like mild stinging, burning, tenderness and the appearance of white flakes where it was applied.
