The imposing exterior is matched by a richly adorned and decorated interior. Dedicated to the Annunciation of Our Lady, this parish church has been subject to significant alteration over the years. Though the original parish dates back to 1592, the structure that remains today was completed in 1627 on the site of three small chapels at the heart of the village. The addition of two spires in 1636 and six side chapels by 1740 concluded the Baroque style structure that still stands.

The design of the church

The church’s interior is decorated with artwork and ornate decorative cornicing. The high alter, designed by Antonio Nikolas is made entirely from marble and the altarpiece is an 1874 work by Pietro Gagliardi depicting the Annunciation. Away from the hectic tourist hot-spots, Tarxien is a true gem of Maltese culture and tradition. Why not plan to visit on the first Sunday of June when the village streets come alive to celebrate the feast of the Annunciation. Tarxien can be easily reached on route 88, which runs every half hour from Valletta in the direction of Gudja.
