Roman gets solar :)

in vanlife •  6 years ago

Roman my motorhome now has solar panels fitted.

I quick update on fitting these solar panels. I bought these panels about 12 year's ago and had fitted them on my VW Kombi pop top camper van I had at that time. They are 100w 12v panels I have joined them together and wired them up in a parallel configuration to make it as a 200w 12 setup.

I tested these panels and they are still producing at 98% of original capacity so they have lasted extremely well over the years.

These are the brackets I had purchased and painted for extra protection from the elements. here they are drying after painting.

I cut some old printer's mat a friend gave me years ago to use as a cushion and to protect the roof paint etc. These will go between the roof and brackets.

You can see the panels wired together and the brackets fitted ready to lift up on to the roof. I put an old blanket on the roof so I could lift up the panels and just slide it across with out scratching the roof.

Once on the roof I marked out and then drilled holes so I can the put the stainless steel bolts in. here you can see the panels bolted down. I used a special sealant around the bolts so water will not leak inside.

The cable fitted through the roof in a special rubber grommet.

Next I just have to wire the panels in to the charge controller unit that managers the battery charging.

Thanks for reading along on this project.

I did not suspect you are so good with your hands :)

I saw, a few months ago, an article about a new solar panel. You can instal it as a solar panel, with these microscopic cells, or you can paint your roof with the paint which includes the cells. They claimed it is 80% more effective than 'traditional' panels.

Maybe they will start off expensive but the prices fall as sales go up? At least it gives you time to get value out of your present setup.

All ways been good with my hands I have completely stripped a few old mini's years ago and rebuilt them and having won a few trophies atbcar shows for them. Amongst other handy type things. That solar paint sound's intetesting I have heard of a similar thing being developed years ago and never heard anymore. Hope this one comes to market thanks for letting me know.
