Week 2 - Glamping in the Rockies πŸš™

in vanlife β€’Β  6 years agoΒ  (edited)

Our second week on the road was HEAPS less stressful than our first. We decided to throw our expectations out the window and just enjoy ourselves. When things don't go to plan, it's easy to feel upset or angry but that's no fun for anyone. Plus we were in the Rockies. It's hard to feel sad when you're surrounded by so much beauty.
Β
Our first night in Alberta was spent at the Lake Louise overflow parking. It's a pretty basic parking lot, but it's in the heart of the mountains. Plus there was a toilet. Since our waste water debacle and the lack of running water, having somewhere with a toilet is pretty high up on our priority list at the moment. We were however boxed in by quite a few trucks that seemed to run all night. But hey, they need somewhere to rest too.

The next morning we headed for the gas station. Our motorhome runs on propane and it's proving a little difficult to find places to fill up. We stopped at a station in Lake Louise and were told that the price was $1.40 per litre. It's usually anywhere between 80 and 90 cents! We couldn't believe it. Needless to say we didn't fill up there. Our 250 litre tank is only getting us about 700 kms so there's no way we're paying more than we have to. We really need to sit down and plan out our fuel stops along the way.
Β
After that, we drove to Banff. We stopped in at Vermilion Lakes and then Tunnel Mountain. I had actually never heard of it before but it was the only campground in Banff that was open. The views up there are spectacular. I should have realised because of the name, but I had no idea we would be camping on top of a mountain. Sure there were stacks of other campers around, but we were able to have hot showers and electricity. The things you take for granted hey. We spent the night admiring the view and cooking cheddar filled Smokies on the fire.

Another beautiful day was upon us, so we made our way to Lake Minnewanka and Two Jack Lake. Minnewanka was only just starting to thaw and Two Jack was completely open. After making the biggest sandwiches of our lives, we spent the afternoon sitting in the sun and photographing the lakes. We would have loved to have stayed at Two Jack Lake campground but unfortunately they were closed. We decided to spend another night at the Tunnel Mountain campground in the unpowered section.

Johnston Canyon was up next. What a beautiful spot! There's this awesome cave off the main track and the view from there is pretty incredible. Here's Ben & I being typical tourists. The walk to the upper falls didn't feel that strenuous at the time, but I definitely overdid it that day. My legs are still going on about it.

After we were done at the canyon, we headed for Canmore. We spent a couple of months living there last year so we were really excited to visit again. We also had some friends who offered up their place to us so we were able to shower everyday. Woohoo! While we were there we were able to fix our leaky roof, hike to Grassi Lakes, stroll trails around the Bow River and spend time with friends.

Ok America, here we come!

And there was I asking in another thread how is the trip going on! Well it looks like it's going great. The picture of the van at night is cool; and we loved the Johnston Canyon: great views, only a few miles to walk on an easy path.

Glad you read everything is looking good (well, except for the gas prices πŸ˜…). Have a nice week!

Haha...oh how things have changed in the last couple of days 😣Stay tuned.

Johnston Canyon is a beautiful walk. I love how the boardwalks wind along the river. Nice and cool on a hot summer's day πŸ‘Œ

And you too!

Heyho Jessica,

I'm low on sp now to upvote, but I will, I love the photos.
I don't know why, but the road photo is so inspiring, I like that vibe.

Sandwiches haha the best traveler's meal! Specially the gigantic ones, bon appetit.

No worries at all. Thanks for taking the time to comment. That SP sure does take a while to recharge sometimes.
