FIFA president, Gianni Infantino, has said plans to use video assistant referees (VARs) at the 2018 World Cup, are still on track following its success at this year’s Confederations Cup.

“Nothing is standing in the way of using VARs (at the World Cup), as far as I’m concerned,” Infantino told a news conference in St Petersburg on Saturday, ahead of the Confederations Cup final.

“So far it has been successful. We are learning, we are improving, we are continuing the tests.”

VARs, which involves two assistant referees watching the game remotely, has drawn its fair share of criticism and Infantino admits that some details need to be worked on.

“Without the VARs, we would have had a different tournament.

“And a tournament which would have been a little less fair.

“We need to work still on some of the details, on the communication and the speed of the decisions being taken,” the FIFA boss added.
