There are plenty of plant-based wholefoods that are excellent sources of protein (nuts, tofu, quinoa, chickpeas, tempeh, peas, lentils, etc) and most people can easily meet their protein requirements with these. However, a protein shake can be very convenient, particularly for someone who is powerlifting or bodybuilding.
These are the protein supplements that I currently use. They aren't necessarily the tastiest but are reasonably priced and sufficiently palatable (although the Botanika Blends one is actually pretty tasty). If money is no object to you then I can recommend Vega protein and I know many people who love Prana On. I normally mix my protein in a shaker with unsweetened almond milk, although sometimes we will also blend it into an acai bowl or smoothie.
My main protein powder at the moment is Pea Protein Isolate from VPA Australia. It is $24 for 1kg and cheaper in multiples (oddly 3kg is cheaper per unit than 4kg) and comes in chocolate and unflavoured. It is one of the cheapest plant proteins on the market. It tastes fine as a shake (although I started lifting and consuming protein powders in the 90s when all of them tasted like chalk so I may have a lower benchmark than some on this) and blends nicely into bowls or smoothies.

My other regular protein is Earth Protein from Bulk Nutrients. This is a mix of rice and pea protein. It is $27 for 1kg and comes in chocolate and vanilla, but the stand out flavour is the salted caramel. The mix and texture is similar to the VPA protein but the salted caramel is nicer tasting.

The final protein that we currently have in the cupboard is Golden Chai Latte by Botanika Blends. These were on sale at Aldi and we thought we would try it. At $40 for a 1kg bag they are more expensive than the other two but it does have minerals, caffeine (via green tea extract), and digestive enzymes rather than just straight protein. It is also quite delicious, with a mix spices including cinnamon, ginger, and cloves giving it a nice chai flavour.

Excellent post, none of these brands are available here in Ireland but I use bulk powders Vegan blend and a few other sups too. I am going to do a post up on them at some stage too, as soon as I can get some time LOL. Day job getting in the way.

Thanks for sharing! I'm always on the lookout for good vegan protein powders. I'm in the states, however I will definitely look for these (ESPECIALLY the salted caramel) on Amazon.
My biggest issue that I've found with protein powders is the serving size. A lot of them are two large scoops. This changes the perception on the price, as right off you believe you are getting a better deal for a larger size, however with inspection, it ends up being less servings. Plus, what fillers are in it that it needs two scoops? Sun Warrior makes a couple of different protein powders with a smaller, 1 serving scoop. It's usually around 16-18g protein per serving.
I guess sometimes we have to sacrifice a little flavor for more grams/serving!

Serving size is definitely something to watch for. Sometimes there will be big print "30 grams protein per serve" then tiny print "serve size 100 grams" or something ridiculous like that.

That chai protein looks amazing! I do like the Vega...it is kind of pricy. Orgain is another good brand...the chocolate fudge is amazing. I'm always on the lookout for proteins that don't have a lot of added weirdness in them...especially artificial sweeteners!

I absolutely agree on some of the odd extra ingredients. I will keep an eye out for Orgain.

Thank you for posting. May I present a different perspective on protein? Human thrives on a low protein diet. You eat enough vegan protein, it's no different from meat eaters of high cancer risk. There are many scientific studies already proving this point. I made a post explaining why we should eat a low protein diet. Remember that vegan can get cancer too. https://steemit.com/vegan/@watermelonprince/how-to-really-eat-healthy-simply-remember-the-5-colors-of-phytonutrients
