      Grammar is taught not as a means of control, but for effective communication. We all make mistakes, but choosing to make those mistakes on purpose is an unspoken suggestion that one doesn't care to communicate effectively, and I think that's what you have run into here. Doesn't mean you're inherently bad, and certainly the folks that mention it aren't either. They simply want to communicate as effectively as possible, and if they can't, the will seek a warmer scene.
