The situation Venezuela is currently crossing is not a secret for anyone. For us, young people have a future independent of our parents, it is difficult since buying a house is almost impossible. I come from a Portuguese family and since I was a child I was instilled with that culture, at parties I could not miss the Portuguese traditions ... My older brother emigrated from Venezuela 13 years ago, when Venezuela still had good conditions. I do not emigrate because of the situation in the country, but of my own will, because I wanted to do it, because he liked Portugal. When my brother got married, we got to his marriage, it was the first time he visited Madeira-Portugal and he really loved the country, he loved the tranquility that was breathed, in general I liked everything. But back then I only came on vacation, so my only concern was to ENJOY.
Little by little the situation in Venezuela became more complicated, for that reason my other two brothers in 2015 also decided to leave my beloved Venezuela, staying alone with my mom and dad. I was studying my Bachelor degree so leaving the country for me was not yet an option.
Every day it was more complicated to have a positive attitude about the situation of the country, I only thought about the day of my graduation to be able to go to Madeira and be with my brothers. I went on Facebook to clarify and everything I found was tragic news of children in the street going hungry, of deaths due to lack of medication and many other things.
My graduation arrived and it became a reality to leave Venezuela, the passage to Madeira was bought 4 months before, so I had 4 months between happy and sad, happy to meet my brothers again and be able to start building my future and sad to leave irreplaceable friends , wonderful customs and some relatives that I still had in Venezuela.
Finally the day of my departure arrived and in me a lot of emotions began to flourish that I can not even explain. It was a long trip so I had so much time to reflect, to realize that yes, I was really leaving my country, not as an act of cowardice but as an act of self-love.
I arrived in Madeira-Portugal and the reunion with my family covered me the fear I had for what I had to face. I am a person that I demand a lot and as soon as I arrive I felt a lot of pressure for the language. Yes, I've been listening to Portuguese all my life and I understand it perfectly, but to speak it has been a challenge for me. I had two days discouraged, missing to wake up and feel the tropical climate of my country (Here we are in winter and it is very cold). When I talked to my sister-in-law or siblings and could not speak fluently, it frustrated me.
The culture of shock, even being a culture that I had always had in my life, was great. But little by little I have managed to adapt, I still need a lot. Every day I learn new things because believe me, everything is different. But being able to achieve your goals and have peace in your life is worth all the effort.
No matter where I am, I will always be proud of being Venezuelan and, even if I have to adapt to a new culture, I will not leave mine. I have so much to thank for life and for God because despite the difficulties I had the opportunity to come to a new country to build all my dreams and do it with my family.
But yes, this is my story.
And something good among many things is that after 13 years the 4 brothers are together again.
And I can see my nephew grow up.
