Venezuela balances the suspension and condemnation of the OAS

The Government of the Venezuelan President, Nicolás Maduro, faces the possibility of being suspended from the organism and condemned by the majority of the countries of the continent during the next General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS) through a resolution.

Venezuela, which came out without a scratch from the last Assembly, faces this time a more complicated scenario.
Diplomatic sources told Efe today that representatives of the Lima Group, which brings together 14 countries in the Americas, are holding meetings to agree on the "tone" of a resolution to be presented at the General Assembly, the most important political forum of the OAS that It will be held in Washington on June 4 and 5.

The approval of a resolution on Venezuela would serve to establish the criterion of legality and legitimacy of the American continent with respect to the Government of Maduro, and, depending on its scope, could lead to changes in diplomatic relations, imposition of sanctions and restriction of visas.

The text, which is still being negotiated, seeks to reject the elections held on May 20, in which Nicolás Maduro was reelected as president and the bulk of the opposition called for abstention, which reached almost 54%, the highest rate in Venezuelan presidential elections of the last two decades.
