MELBOURNE has been chosen to host the finals of the World T20 at the 2020 tournament, as details and venues for the event were announced.
Eight cities will share hosting duties for the tournament which, for the first time, will have the men’s and women’s competitions held as stand alone events in the same host country and year.
The host cities are: Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Geelong, Hobart, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney.
The MCG, which also hosted the 2015 men’s World Cup final, will host both the men’s and women’s final.
The women’s tournament will run from February 21 to March 8, with the men’s component taking place later in the year from October 18 to November 15.
Ten teams will contest the women’s event, with the top eight-ranked nations from 2018 represented - with two more teams to be added after a mid-2019 qualifying tournament.
There will be two pools of five, with the top two from each group to advance to the knock-out stages
In the men’s tournament, 16 teams will be involved.
“Australia is extremely privileged to be hosting the ICC World T20 tournaments in 2020,” said Cricket Australia Chairman David Peever.
“(The World T20) provides a unique opportunity to engage the whole community and inspire the next generation to love cricket.”
The SCG will host both women’s semi-finals, on consecutive days, while the men’s semis will be hosted by the SCG and Adelaide Oval.
Australia’s women have won three World T20 titles from five tournaments, while the men have historically struggled — and reached just one final, where they were beaten by the West Indies in the Caribbean in 2010.
A full schedule will be announced at a later date.
