Why its important to verify yourself as a newcomer

in verification •  7 years ago

Hey everyone!

For a long time while curating the #introduceyourself tag I've tried to tell users that it would be appreciated if they would verify being the person they claim to be. Not only because there are a lot of plagiarists and ID thefts occurring because of the monetary rewards that go towards intro posts, but also because we as curators would feel a lot safer knowing we are rewarding actual unique people. The worst case scenario about this in my mind for long was that someone would start out pretending to be someone else and use their ID to get a lot of rewards from the platform. This turned out to have happened yesterday.

I remember this one user in particular coming onto steemit.chat and DM'ing me and a few other high influential users her introduction post. It seemed odd that she knew who to contact on her first post but I brushed it off as I figured her friends would've explained to her. She made some rewards and got picked up by other users either through messages or autovotes later on. After a while my suspicions became bigger and bigger combined with the time some of her group got put on the cheetah list for sending transactions to the same Bittrex memo so I decided to stop rewarding her posts until things got more clear about their situation. Now I am glad that I did that cause this is what occurred yesterday.

I was browsing #introduceyourself and noticed a new poster with a familiar face, I quickly checked my DM's on steemit.chat trying to remember her username and got to her steem account and commented this:

I was not surprised to hear that that user had been fake, or in this case controlled by another person. Even more so when I remembered she specifically made a verification video proving she was the owner of the account. So I replied with this:

Now if we were to believe her, it seems as if she has been contacted by that fake Steem user and asked to do a verification video. Why she accepted to do such a thing and if there was money involved is not something I am aware of, but this is why you should be careful with how your content or your ID is used online. If it sounds too good to be true to just make a photo or video of yourself "verifying" your identity to someone else for some rewards, it often means that someone else is gaining more from it.

Now we are left with an ID thief who has made a lot of Steem and powered it all down and the real user coming to the platform trying to start fresh but having a lot of shady history and not many readers that will believe her for future posts. What if this user is fake as well? What if her way to prove it is just another middlemen transaction being paid for in advance so the ID thief can keep on pretending to be someone else?

This is a pretty unique case but I just wanted to highlight why its important to verify yourself as a newcomer. Verifying yourself doesn't mean you have to show your real identity, doing it through other social platforms where you have spent a lot of time and activity can work as well. I for instance proved my identity through my active Reddit account.

Anyway, I know it often seems a bit too much to ask a newcomer to verify themselves, but I encourage you to ask anyway in the future just to avoid these ID thefts and let the newcomers know that if they do verify themselves it often means that the readers and curators feel a lot more safe placing their votes on their intro posts. Most of the people won't mind verifying and will understand where you are coming from.

Thanks for reading.

well, i think she is not so smart too.. you can't make a video for the web, saying what a friend told to say..

Seems that maybe there could be a verification badges for types of users.

Explicitly, there are good bots operating for the communities benefit. They could be denoted by an official emblem that lets people know the account is a bot.

Accounts being used by real humans could earn verification as well. Perhaps via a set of votes or processes. For me it seems as simple as cross promoting via other social networks, as some of us are actively doing. Say maybe there is an organization like the Steemcleaners that will screenshot and document what they see.

Just offering up ideas because I don't think all bots are bad. Yes their are bad bots but it seems that the tools are in place to proceed towards making the situation better.

I agree ..there must be a verification level or badges for different users

()

After reading more about what @ned was saying about Oracles, it seems like maybe this concept could be related to those components when launched.

This is a major problem with this platform. The ease of which you can just create an account in someone else's likening is crazy. I know that it would be hard to make this harder for people to do but efforts need to be taken.

I think an introductory post with a picture is almost a necessity. You don't have to give out your full name or whatever but knowing that there's a real human willing to show their face is a good start.

Trying to stop people imitating real people though is a whole other kettle of fish.

The problem isn't really exclusive to steemit. You have any idea how many fake profiles there are on FB and other social media sites created with malicious intentions?

It's an uphill battle with no real solution. Taking people's phone numbers on account creation is a way to combat this, using pictures and video verification for intro posts is a good way to verify... but short of requiring passport verification (which would anger a lot of people), I don't see any way to combat it.

Only thing we can do is pay attention to who we're rewarding on here IMO.

Agreed.. first I didn't notice it and after I post something in introduceyourself I became noticeable.. as a nub

This problem is true for any social media. It might be a bit bigger problem here as there is no verification check, though if you go by Twitter's standards, it's not like that means anything.

@acidyo that is a great catch and very good advice on verification. Until you shared this posting I was really never aware that this could be happening which takes away from the STEEMIT platform. Thank You

Question: For new users who prefer not to show their face for privacy, is there a recommendation for how they'd handle this hurdle? I ask because I have a friend that just signed up and they'd like to remain as private as possible.

Do they have other social media accounts with activity on them? Its more of a proving you aren't just pretending to be someone else than having to show who you are. They could post on that platform that they recently created a steem account and link to that in their intro post or something. Many take a picture without showing their full face but having a sign up showing their steem username for example.

Appreciate the tips. I'd imagine that they'd want to keep their other social media separate, so it sounds like a partial face it the middle ground. I wish I could go back and do that knowing that it wasn't necessary when I signed up.

If they're not claiming to be a particular person, there's no need for them to verify themselves.

to be honest I haven't bothered verifying my account so far and don't know if i will. i think doing it on one post that will soon be lost on your blog page makes it a bit pointless.
I'd much rather see an app that you use to take a selfie and asks you to put a set message on your twitter of Facebook account . your picture and link are then sent to set number of moderators who will check your account for the message thus verifying your identity. we could then have a symbol next to our names to say our accounts have been verified.

Ah, wow! I remember @lambarik.
I asked her why she was blacklisted, and I was worried that such mistakes from cheetah could affect someone like me too. She said she was confused herself, but everything was fine after she clarified.
Then she got a tonne of upvotes when she played the victim!

may be you can see introduce post by @kravtsova

And @lambarik

lol...

Online theft ,has to give some thought to that 1st user if it is that much of true ,using even a video from the real user ,that is intense and for real this is 1st time i am hearing about this kind of matter .

Will be more cautious and hope new users do not get scammed or used like this !
Who is who ,now that is difficult to get !

Never thought someone could fake ID or claim to be someone else on such website. Like they say, everyday we go a bit closer to the hell.

Thank you. Based on a conversation last night I was going to write about this too but it is definitely better coming from you.

It would be great if there were a few trusted verification sources, admins and a mark on the profile as verified. For example a check mark next to the profile image.

Sorry, but what is the point of verification?

There are many different ways to verify, the one in the article is just an example. When it comes to most people, they have many various social media accounts, business websites and emails etc. Most people weren't thinking they would create them for a future verification purpose.

It isn't foolproof but there is at least an attempt to verify. Even if one gets around it, they still need to produce decent content consistently. It isn't an automatic upvote once verified, especially from @acidyo.

Let's get something e straight here; apart from ID theft that this post is mainly about, please, is it a crime in steemit for someone to have multiple accounts.

I'm asking because there are many impressions being thrown up on this issue of multiple steemit account.

Its not, but of course it's not nice if you pretend to be different people on them.

Thank you for such clarification, people sometimes dares to sin over non issue due to ignorance and evil hypes poised on a particular issue.

I'm not suggesting it CURRENTLY is against the rules.

This is crazy @acidyo!
I bet there are more situations like this...
I think the best way to verify your self is to attend the SteemFest and this is what i am going to do next year!
Have a great week-end!

Upvoting introduceyourself tagged posts creates the incentive. People can remove votes and flag before a week elapses. Your attention matters.

A true identity is the need of the tym. Fake accoint are not to be entertained

Verification is an important aspect in every productive community. Its necessary to be real so that people can identify who they dealing

Sorry, but what is the point of verification?
"bad" people will get past it.
"good" people post personal info online.

How many times are you going to post this same reply?

Sorry new user, I thought I was replying to diff people.
my screen did not update.
Still learning - apologies

This is something that I was thinking a lot about lately. Especially when it comes to celebrity names. Someone can easily make a Steemit account with a celebrity's name and profit off of their image. Without any kind of authentication, there really is no way to know for sure that it's the actual person or if it's a fake account. I can see this becoming a problem as Steemit becomes more popular and big names become attracted to it.

Steemit is a nice platform i have ever seen! I really love when i see some Steemit users working hard to grow this community and trying to make a bigger platform. @acidyo is one of them. Still some stupid people trying to make fake accounts and want to kill this community. I think steemit dev team should make some rules.. For a new user, first post will be about himself with a selfie. Never want this platform will be died!

What is ID "verification" ??
What is the point? Only "good" people do that!
and in the process give away their personal info.

Thanks for this post... I saw many fake accounts... Don't know whose ID are those accounts using... It is a crucial problem for real steemians...
You said right, that how can one person allow other persons to make his or her video and let it be with the other person...
We all should be very careful about in this case... Thanks for this wonderful post to warn everybody...

@acidyo, You catch massive point this occasion. That is a huge problem in this blockchain platform. The best way you show how to verify account ourselves, then can be keep our Reputation high level.

SHARKS here on steemit? ID theft, that is so low! Never ever thought this would take place when I joined this platform all starry eyed some 4 months ago, reading some awesome content & then later on starting to see some awful content with high rewards, basically making a mockery of the platform! Not nice!

I just updated my profile, by putting my Facebook page here on steemit.

Wait... am I reading correctly? The user Kravstova declares the other user named Lambarik is a fake. Yet her profile shows a fb page to "Lambarskaya". Same name almost as her fake, that also happens to be the one with video verification. Seems like a serial fake phenomenon. Baffled ... for what though? https://www.facebook.com/lambarskaya <-- see ?

this is a great post brother your valuable post is very importent for me

Nice to read ,thank you for info @acidyo ( Re-steemed and upvote

there have been many fake accounts in steemit now by being someone else and asking them for money!

IMHO, the situation you have described looks like one person has 2 steemit ID, not a stolen ID. but of course, I cannot be sure

i dont understand importance of giving any of personal info to steemit, or anywhere else.
from given example, it looks like most scammers do their homework, and make nice looking verifications.

actually it seems that whole verification thing is just great backdoor from scammers, as it gives them aura of being real for majority of users.

also, noone is real.
nothing cant be more fake than someones real fb, insta or tw account ;)

finding REAL things and people takes much time and effort.

Agree . Im new here , i just like the platform and idea . I do not feel the need to verify myself personally as i do not beg for upvotes and follows and what not , im here to see the platform evolve so i can decide for future investments , if i make some friends along the way awesome , if i learn something new even more awesome , but i totally support the verification idea if people are serious about being here. On the other hand if people ignore and just do not care about who's content they upvote and resteem then be it , let them learn from past mistakes , practice makes perfect. Does this even make sense what i wrote ? Hahaha. Cheers

Thanks a bunch @acidyo. This post will go a long way in creating awareness especially for newbies like me. I will always watch out for your posts to learn more about this platform.

The cheek of some people. Really gets on my nerves this sort of thing.

Should verification be made standard practice going forward, or is it still up to 'us' to do it?

Does that help?
or does it give us a "false sense of security".

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

Does what help? Verifying people?

Edit: yes and perhaps.

Yes, I'm asking how &/or why verification might help.
'bad' people can get get past any 'gatekeeper'
'good' people just give away ID info.

Multiple accounts are fine by me for a number of reasons.

It's the accounts that are mainly showing themselves eating food in a bikini on a deserted island in Indonesia that need to prove it is them with the 100,000 Instagram followers.

I don't need to prove who I am, my 'business' is not built around my 6 pack - because i don't pretend to have one.

There are easy ways to prove who you say you are. A picture of you, with your steemit login, and today's date (newspaper).

I am interested in the "number of reasons" as I said.
To me it creates an unlevel playing field (#votes /person/day )
and adds to the 'fictional' char problem.

  • Security

  • A 'community' account like @curie/@ocd/@steemitblog/cheetah/@spaminator/@minnowsupport /bidbots

  • steemvoter account to vote a subset of your total SP to people and communities you wish to support longer term

  • Testing

  • Zappl

  • To focus on individual subject areas

I think others could add to that list easily.

Thanks for info.

This is not the problem of steemit only, this happens on lots of platform facebook, gmail, steemit and many more.
But one thing i want to say is that steemit has more real people accounts compare to all other platforms(social media).
Steemit has more better verification system than all other social media platforms.
And i hope steemit will get more better day by day.

verification is important for a person, verification trusted you

Loading...

I did exactly that with my #introduceyourself post. I wanted to brand my "Big E" symbol and the EverNoticeThat moniker online, instead of me personally.

Having had my content copied in the past, I was leery of having my image taken as well. So, hoodie up, glasses on and sign in front gave me a tiny bit of privacy.

I also urge caution for single women living alone giving out too much information about themselves.

I used to work for Verizon and my co-workers boyfriend was murdered by her ex-husband due to too much info being given out and too much trust from the ex-wife.

She was flattered having two men wanting her at the same time, and invited her ex over for Thanksgiving dinner with her new boyfriend. He had threatened her before. The boyfriend paid the price. Sad. So be careful out there folks.

I consider us all one big family and wish only the best for each and every one of you. :)

yeah I remember how I had to verify myslef cause craig did not believe me that it was my account on steemit ^^

She's lucky that she gain rewards and upvotes. Lot of new users are bypass, like they do not exist.

Identity theft is indeed a very serious issue. Not just on steemit, it's everywhere. Thank you for pointing this out, @acidyo

I get it why verification is important......BUT....what if i'm not in any other social platforms? (This is it for me). Lets face it verification should be done in a different matter....what kind - I do not know. Anyone can take whatever is mine and use it as his own...as for art yes....I can prove its my own with original program files etc...but lets face it, the doodle files - i delite most of them anyway.

Maybe it wouldn't hurt to make the demands higher and simply want an ID or smth to enter steemit. Would be much more work but also kill most of the riff raff...

Hello Everyone, I hope you are enjoying Steemit!

Hmmm you right buddy. Many fake people do that to get more upvotes

Hello, @acidyo. Yes, this is true. But if you whant to check the accounts from IP it isn't the best plan to find the fakes accounts.
As example, me and my Wife we have account at steemit, and we use the same internet provider (same IP), and many times, same laptop.

Thank you and I hope that I comment only for making a best security program to find the fake accounts.

Succes !

When I was a newbie and was first asked for a verification my hands went wet, my face went pale and I was close to falling down from the chair:) I had no idea how to do it, but luckily I was explained. From that time I time to time update my verification:)
The pain is... I see that 80% of people who have problems are from countries close to mine of directly from mine. It makes me thinking about general national tendency:(

I think there are many counterfeit IDs in this platform, they are just trying to grab money by showing different temptations targeting new IDs.

Hard to say who's faking who? And who's real. Why do such thing when they themselves can be rewarded by introducing the real them! They are so hard worker doing fake account to introduced maybe because they knew you are their @acidyo curating the tag, hahaha just making u laugh if it does. Steem on and God bless.

nice post

Thanks for sharing these tips. We live in a time were identity theft is getting common. Doing a video of yourself for someone else for money or anything at all? That sounds really dumb to me. I don't know, do you think it is too late for me to do an #introduction post? I joined about 45 days ago. I didn't really know much about steemit when I joined.

Where there is money matter, this type of thing will be troublesome , no doubt. Steemit can implement photo and document verification from the time of making account.

thank you for letting us know of all this. I'm very new to steemit and up until now i want to learn more... didn't know that such case is existing here too since the registration alone takes some time.

It would definitely help new comers.

waw you really have to be carefull always!

Good luck

Thanks for sharing and a great recommendation about even if you don't reveal your true identity on the platform, this can be done so by other means.

useful advice!
but to tell you the truth it is not easy for a newcomer to understand how it is important and moreover - how to make it(
I am here not very long but I am still lost in may things, and verification is among them( I don't see a definite instruction anywhere.

By the way in Russian analoque of Steemit verification is important as well BUT only if you repost your own posts from other social nets. I wrote there only new info, published nowhere before, so vetification was not needed.
Here is it not the same?

Wow...doing a verification video...and yet...verifying another username?

I think I need some time to get my head around this.

(Instead of doing a verification post --- I tweet my Steemit posts...from my Twitter handle that has a Tweet embedded on my site)

So...you think I probably gotten only 1% of the rewards I should have? (Or is it the case that...uhh...a user is blocked from receiving rewards that already visible on their account?)

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

I also think they just get rewarded through their introductory post that it is the same person, there have been many fake accounts in steemit now by being someone else and asking them for money!

Dang it, I already posted my intro and cannot add any images. What's another way to verify...? Perhaps updating my profile pic....? You know, Steemit could have a "verification" process where power users must upload their image along with the date prior to payout. I'm sure this could be gamed (like, photoshopped), but it's better than nothing.

People shouldn't be forced to identify themselves because of a few bad actors.
Many of us that have been around the internet for a while are strong proponents of privacy, sometimes due to negative occurrences.
It should be up to an individual how much they want to share.
Catfishing is not new to Steemit.

welcome to steemit.. ^^

One of the big issues of our time. One of the great promises of blockchain is the ability to be anonymous. The large corporations and governments are using our info for profit and control. Yet here we are, asking people to verify themselves using the same control mechanisms we are trying to be rid of. I smell an amazing opportunity here. Many people shy away from social media because they don't want their personal information shared by people they do not trust. What can we do as a community to solve the issue? I don't know much about Oracles or Avatars or A.I., So feel free to school me.

Hi @acidyo thanks for sharing this post! I didn't realize you could DM users on steemit. I just tried, but site won't load. Is there something I need to do or a certain link I need to use to access it?

I must say........ you are right....

@acidyo thank you for sharing...

I have lost a friend here because he believed in a troll that i am a fake person despite all my efforts of putting my uninteresting face all over here.

?

A troll tried to destroy my reputation by telling lies about me, like I am a member of a conniving group and that I am just exploited, and that I cannot make such posts because of my condition and all that belittling remarks. One friend believed that troll sso we do not visit each other's posts anymore.

That's sad to hear. I understand the skepticism sometimes though, all sorts of players come in when there is money involved.

You are absolutely right there are so many fake accounts on steemit it"s so imperative that you know who you are chatting with by providing us with a video or a picture. I am sure you will get many more replies to your post. That's why I feel the verification is very important. I appreciate you taking the time to write this excellent post you have my vote

I got reported to facebook last year for using a 'fake name' and because I was living without a phone (on a sailboat in the Caribbean), it took me 3 months to get my account back. Trying to prove that I was who I said became harder than it should have been, because I couldn't even find a way to verify my identity.

If there is anyway to actually verify an identity on here, I'm all for it. I'd rather it be certain that I am who I say I am so I don't have to worry about it in the future.

I have plenty of social media accounts and most of them include my real name (Byn) with variations at time, so I suppose for the most part, it's probably apparent that I am who I say I am. Plus, I suppose I'm a total newbie, so maybe no one cares yet? :)

Interesting post, nonetheless, you've got me thinking...

I would be very open to a verification process. It would seem to greatly increase the credibility of the platform. Maybe integration with a tool like Civic.

Wow, this is eye opening. Very timely for me as a newbie. Thanks @acidyo for sharing. This will be my first resteemed post.

Interesting post. Thanks. I invite to visit my blog.

I realized how important is to have a verification of our accounts some time ago but unfortunately steemverify was offline for long time and just a couple of days ago they came back online. So I just paid my verification there and in the next days I should have my verification badge.
