...Your idea of yellow jacket extermination involves strategically positioning an entire pack of firecrackers at the entrance to their nest in the woodpile, lighting the fuse, and running away.
Also, your idea of getting rid of a huge hornet's nest in a tree involves a shotgun.
I guess when you work with bombs and missiles and things that go boom! for a living for many years, as the Husband did in the Navy, firecrackers and shotguns as rather unconventional methods of insect control are no big deal. He was an Aviation Ordnanceman, and has always been a redneck. Come to think of it, those incidents apply equally well to "You might be a redneck if" so he's got a double dose of influence that makes my life entertaining.
Up on the flight deck for FOD walkdown. FOD is a word that my kids are growing up with, lol.
It's funny how the military can influence your day to day habits, thinking, and speech, and you may not even realize it unless somebody points it out. I'm a veteran myself, who grew up in a military family, plus I'm married to a retired veteran; so even though we are now civilians who don't live anywhere near a base, it's still difficult for me to imagine life without military influence of some sort. It's simply part of my culture and "who I am".
One day the Husband took the kids to preschool, and I picked them up. One of the other moms regaled me with her gleeful account of how, in the elevator that morning, Little Man had run into somebody and the Husband said, "Son! You really need to have more situational awareness!"
"Who says situational awareness to their kids?" giggled the other mom, to me.
Um, I do? You mean that's weird?
Military time is a thing in our house (and the same mom who laughed at "situational awareness" also found it amusing that I write "0845" instead of "8:45" on the sign in sheet at school.) I don't hang onto military time out of irrational devotion to military life. It's a habit and I just happen to like it better. I've also had somebody remark on the fact that I "walk fast" and with a purpose.
I guess we are civilian non-conformists :-)))
For the other veterans around here, in what ways has military influence become a permanent part of your own personal life?
(This article is inspired by the fact that my dependent ID is expired and I'll have to venture into the wonderful world of PSD to get another one. I guess the best way to explain PSD to civilians is to liken it to the DMV. Hooray for government acronyms!)
Don't conform if you don't want to 24 hour time has it's advantages.
So do firecrackers and Mossburgs, But dichotomous earth has advantages too. It makes excellent flea powder that you can use in your home or straight on the dogs. It actually works really well because the residual amount remaining in the cracks of the floors and carpets and what not doesn't allow the larva and eggs to mature.

Really? Thanks for the tip! I've seen people recommend DE to keep mites off chickens, but applying it to dogs too never occurred to me. One of our dogs had terrible skin allergies last summer and the vet said it was probably from flea bites even though I give them Nexgard. I'll have to check into DE as another preventative.

In the house it's as good as bug bombing with out the poinson, but it does take time.

It gets up in their exoskeleton works for all crawly type bugs. As well as flying ones that land in it.
But you don't want to leave piles of it around just sprinkle the floors and carpets leave on the carpets overnight and sweep it around the hard wood and let some get in the cracks, stuff on the hardwood clean up once your done spreading it.
It works so well because it interrupts the life cycle preventing more.

My father, mother, brother, and I were all military at some point in our lives. We would sit around the table talking during supper and my sister (not military) would often have to stop us and get us to use real words because she had no idea what we were talking about with all the acronyms.

Oh, I can relate to that! Acronyms become second nature! I laughed at "real words" :-))) Were all 4 of you in the same branch of service? The Navy is predominant with us, but we each had 1 family member that went rogue and joined the Marines instead ;)

I loved this! Thank you to you and your husband for your service to our country. Our children are watching The Band of Brothers series with us right now. I know, I know... most people are mortified that we would let them but hey folks, THIS IS REAL LIFE and these men and women DIED for OUR FREEDOM! I don't want to candy coat this for our children. I want them to see the sacrifice made each and every day for us as Americans. Freedom isn't free.

My goodness, thank you for you service for our country. Without people like you and your husband who knows where this country would be. Really a blessing. Interesting the way we establish behavioral habits based upon our experiences. I can't imagine what extermination technique your husband would use down here to get rid of our fire ants!

Without people like you it would have been a whole lot harder <3 Thank you so much!
As for fire ants...I think he pretty much gave up on those utter banes of existence, but I'm pretty sure he's similarly messed with them in the past, if my memory serves me right :-)))
