Guess who's in this movie. That's not entirely accurate. The only member of the Guess Who to appear in this film is Burton Cummings, in his first and only feature film role. He plays a washed up rock star who reluctantly falls in love with an illiterate, backwoods woman played by the sweet Glynnis O'Connor.

Cummings is not bad for a new thespian who is more accustomed to being a musician. He plays a convincing drunk but perhaps he had a lot of practice living his rock 'n' roll lifestyle. I don't think Cummings liked all the waiting around one has to do when shooting a movie and that's why he never made another one.

If you enjoy Cummings' solo career -- I was lucky enough to see him perform live--, you'll probably enjoy Melanie. He performs several of his songs from his album Sweet Sweet. Melanie was a Canadian production that is even obscure here in Canada. I don't think it was ever even released on any other home format besides VHS. It's a heartwarming story.

Augh Burt Cummings....the Burton Reynolds of the North. Great post...I didn't know.

Yeah, I always thought he resembled Burt Reynolds, too.

I just realized that another member of the Guess Who appears briefly in this film. Gary Peterson, drummer for the Guess Who, can be seen playing in Cummings' band as they perform You Saved My Soul during the closing credits.
