This started out OK...Joaquin was even funny with the anecdote about his sisters.. I thought alright this guy has matured...he's in a big movie and he's more comfortable with this part of the game...wrong!
This quickly progressed into the discomfort zone that Joaquin always lands in....and I now believe jumps head first into...
And I know people want to blame Jimmy, but no...this guy is antagonistic and antisocial. Just carefully listen to how he always has to oppose every comment Jimmy has to make.
And I'm not saying that he has to be a social butterfly and agreeable to the hosts every whim, but there is a method to the madness...and he's been at this for a while...I'm not a huge Kimmel fan either, so don't get me wrong. But, these are REHEARSED interviews, so they should be relatively smooth.
I get it, the tortured artist hates being interviewed...oh woe is the poor soul that gets payed millions of dollars to pretend. If he's such a good actor the least he can do is pretend to be an easier interview...not for my or the audience's sake but at least for the sake of his management, who are probably shitting bricks in the back...he should try and "act" like a guy who can do a rehearsed interview.
I understand it wouldn't be authentic to his true nature blah blah blah....but if he's really that protective of himself, then he should attempt to hide it and project something that is easier to view...and not out of consideration for the audience because he cleary doesn't care about them, but for all the hard working people that made the movie.
Their work is done, but they depend on the publicity carrying the film and their careers and these talk shows are part of it.
Mind you Joaquin doesn't come across as dislikeable. He comes across as a victim of Kimmel....which he isn't. This is selfish self indugent bullshit.
It's very easy to feel bad for him...his back story, and the legacy of his brother etc.....River didn't like the showbiz train either, but he never made people feel bad or uncomfortable...he was considerate.
Very few people are comfortable or like this process, but they ACT though it....this is part of the multimillion dollar salary...do your job!
I swear I tried to watch this twice and had to cut it short because I just couldn't handle it. I haven't even seen the end.
Jimmy did his best with a guy who I actually think loves going against the grain....he's not the victim here. Eventhough he's probably willing to play that card. Everyone in the comments felt for him (poor Joaquin, poor guy, Jimmy is a jerk etc) without really paying attention to his continual conflict oriented speech and reaction pattern.
I wonder why the director would even send such an irritating "blooper" reel. Probably to get back at the guy who must have made the set a living hell torture session for the cast and crew for three months.
Anyway, this was my rant...I guess some would say he was actually being true to the character of Joker by playing someone antagonistic to the host...but I've been watching his interviews for twenty years and he's been doing this with every movie...making everyone squirm or feel sorry for him...and I actually think it's a well practiced mechanism of a guy who just can't stand to be asked questions, but chose a career in which he contually has to.
