→ Swastika or Manji—What Does It Mean?

in video •  6 years ago

Another great video from Asia Boss, this one looking at the difference between a manji and a swastika and if the average Japanese person knows the difference. Spoilers: most don't. One of them also seems to think the nazi symbol would make a good band logo. 🤔

For those not familiar, the manji is a sacred symbol in Japan, used on Buddhist temples and also to mark their location on maps. It symbolizes prosperity and good luck. It was used this way in many Western countries too (like the States) before Hitler ruined it for us.

Many people of my generation were probably first introduced to the manji in the NES classic The Legend of Zelda where one of the dungeons is shaped like a manji. The level was known among the kids at my elementary school as the "Nazi level".

Anyway, interesting video.

I love that YouTube channel!

Totally agree.

One of my favorite videos is of Japanese people trying American sushi and rating it 0 hahaha pretty funny! I like American sushi though :)

I haven't seen that one yet. I'll have to look for it! haha yeah most Japanese I have talked to are pretty negative on US sushi. Many don't like how it is non-traditional. The funny thing about that is that at fast food sushi places here (ie conveyor belt sushi places) there are so many bizarre and non-traditional sushi creations and they are all very popular. I think the Japanese just like to hate on US sushi because it's not Japan. haha. I like US sushi as long as it is fairly fresh.

Hahaha makes perfect sense! Of course they do it better :D and the right way!

Of course ;)
