This is a full-size replica of the Froelich traction engine 1937 manufactured in Waterloo Iowa known simply as the frolic and the only one known to exist.
This full-size scale replica was commissioned by John Deere and company for its 1937 centennial celebration since then of the original frolic tractors survived deer service manager Fred G Hillman and his team relied on pictures to find parts in the local scrap yards and offs experimental equipment the engine you see on this tractor is a single cylinder Model D test engine adjusted to run as a vertical engine like the original frog when the tractor was complete it was shipped to Los Angeles California for the filming of making tractor history a movie commissioned by Deere to document the history of the company during World War two this tractor was almost scrapped and used for the war effort you can still see some of the damage done to the drive axle before the tractor was saved from demolition in the early 1890s Iowa resident John frolic managed a threshing crew in Iowa in South Dakota to make his job easier frolic combined a bandhas stationary engine and a robinson chassis creating the first traction engine capable of moving forward and in Reverse in January 1893 Bullock returned to the Northeast Iowa had formed the Waterloo gasoline traction engine company but his machine design was far from perfect as the company struggle its line of stationary engines became the profitable part of the business facing financial room investors removed frolic as president and reorganized as the Waterloo gasoline engine company.
