This is the sixth video in my Animals on the Homestead Series.
Quail are the newest addition around here. If you'd like to learn a bit about them and find out why we chose to add them to our animal inventory, check out my video below.
ANIMALS ON THE HOMESTEAD VIDEO 6 – QUAIL
A FEW THINGS TO CONSIDER
While Quail produce meat and eggs, they are smaller than other varieties of homestead birds.
The small size of Quail mean that they have many predators.
Quail can be raised in a smaller pen than other homestead birds, due to their smaller size.
Quail can be noisy.
Quail, quail meat, and quail eggs can all be used for sale or barter.
Quail manure can be composted and used as garden fertilizer.

The quail farm can be a good alternative for the household economy, not only to generate economic income, but also to prepare exotic plastids with both its meat and its eggs.

I’ve thought about raising quail before but never pulled the trigger. I’ve found the eggs really hard to crack. To little pressure and nothing opens. Too much and she’ll gets everywhere!
Also is that a picture of a quail tractor?

Cool stuff! I have thought about quail here. Also possibly turkey. Just enough to have some turkey around Christmas time . I even thought about a water buffalo. They are great for work, plowing and towing a tree or something. A live tractor! They say real mozzarella cheese is made fro the water buffalo milk. I wonder if you can clip the wings of a quail and keep them from flying out if a fenced area. Or if they can free range and still come home to roost every night like chickens?
I love the eggs!

Something I've really wanted to find was someone who raises all different kind of egg-laying birds to do a taste testing video. I once found a video where a guy had like 2 dozen different eggs from various species and breeds of birds. I was so excited, he cracked each one on a plate so you could see the difference... then proceeded to dump all the eggs into one frying pan and make a giant batch of scrambled eggs... sigh. I know people say duck eggs are richer, but a little rubberier when overcooked. I have heard quail eggs are sweeter, but they're a pain to crack. I have also heard turkey eggs are naturally salty. Regardless, it would be cool to have a side-by-side comparison with several tasters. Anyways, thank you for all these posts and videos about different animals for your farm/home/homestead/etc.

Another thing about quail is different breeds can be pretty different. Using info from a local hatchery that has two varieties, the Bobwhite is a little bigger, but only lays 40-50 eggs per year. The Pharaoh Coturnix is a little smaller, but it lays 200-300 eggs a year. That's a pretty big difference in production.

These are some sort of Coturnix, but @armadillocreek would know better.

I like quail eggs. Haven't seen quails up close and personal but I think they are cute! ♥ Cuter than chickens! But native chickens are cute too.
Do you know, because of your quail cage making post, I bought some quail eggs when I saw some a week or so ago. :D Now I'm even holding a food contest about quail eggs. Haha.
