ANIMALS ON THE HOMESTEAD - RABBITS

in video •  7 years ago

As promised, this is another video series that I am beginning to help build the homesteading community on steemit.

Along with my video series on why we chose to homestead and the one I started yesterday about plants on the homestead, I will also be sharing about the animals that we chose to have on our homestead.

In this series I will feature some animals that we already have, and some that we hope to get, and how each one fits into our goals for our homestead. I'll share some of the benefits, and any potential drawbacks if they come to mind.

ANIMALS ON THE HOMESTEAD VIDEO 1 - RABBITS

A FEW THINGS TO CONSIDER

  • Rabbit manure is a cold manure, which means that it can be applied directly to plants as a fertilizer without burning or harming them.

  • Rabbits can use wild grasses and plants as part of their diet, cutting back on the cost of food.

  • Rabbits produce like rabbits, so you can easily end up with a lot more.
  • Rabbits can be sold, so breeding rabbits can be a good source of income.

  • As a food source, breeding a buck (male rabbit) and two does (female rabbits) can provide the same amount of meat as one entire cow over the course of a year. Not only is that a lot of meat, since you do not have to process it all at once like you do with a cow, you don't need to store it in the freezer for a whole year either.

  • If you do eat them, the pelts can be tanned and sold or used for clothing as well.

  • Baby bunnies are very cute and cuddly, and are a great part of raising rabbits.

As always, I'm @papa-pepper and here's the proof:

great example

Thank you @luisneira!

we can also take advantage of the rabbit urine is very good to be a liquid organic fertilizer with mixed sugar or carbo hydrate, and in aerobic vermentation for seven days. you can also see on our blog how to make liquid organic fertilizer from goat urine and rice laundry water.

@papa-pepper in the Crypto's we have POW = Proof of Work, POS = Proof of Stake........and in the area of 4 legged furry creatures we have POR = Proof of Rabbit........STEEM On my Brother !

Yeah, it is a little running joke that I have, but we think it is funny!

Sorry to post this here, @papa-pepper, but I found another Steemit user reposting videos without asking or citing sources. They took one of mine, and while I was delving, I noticed they took one of yours, too

Not sure if they're just ignorant on Steemit or trying to pull a fast one, so I'll let you respond as you see fit.

Thank you!

French people eat rabbits, too. They can be quite tasty if cooked and properly seasoned (red wine is one ingredient). I haven't had any for a long time, but I still vaguely remember the taste.

Many around the world through the ages have. We like ours in a stew, but I hope to smoke some in the future.

Excellent post friend. In venezuela is rare eat a rabbit but with actual crysys the people in the towns are creating rabbits to eat. Personally i have eaten with wine and its delicious,

We have enjoyed a few for meals too.

I remember my sister having a white rabbit with red eyes as a pet. I loved that fluffball. So funny seeing him growing as a pet and knowing rabbits are scared so quickly and he was like the friendliest rabbit of them all. When he got too big we sent him to the countryside ... hmm ... I don't even know what happened to him to be frank ... probably got eaten I guess. I bet he had an amazing taste :)

Wow! Really, you guys just set him free?

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

Nah, meant I gave him to grandma as she lives in the countryside to take better care of him, but never asked her what happened to the rabbit, maybe for the better :) cuz he prob got chopped and shoved into the oven

my friend is amazing @papa-pepper

Thank you very much!

Rabbits are our meat source since 2009 - and just as you mentioned, there is the great advantage of not having to process and store a huge amount at one time... We are breeding "Deutsche Riesenschecken" (German Gigants?) now, but had Burgunder and Blaue Wiener in the past as well... cheers from Germany

Cheers! I've heard of Flemish Giants, but not German Giants. I'll have to look into those! Thank you.

do it! the Flemish (here called Belgium Giants) are great, too. cheers from our homestead here in Germany :-) the ones on this pic are about 5 months now and will go into the kitchen anytime there is a need or crawe for meat... with all the time-planing this takes :-)

"

This sounds like I need to get another rabbit to breed with our current one!!

Perhaps you should!

What is the best way to tell if your rabbit is a boy or girl?

I actually love the part where you say that a cow is a lot more dangerous than your rabbit.. :) Also there is the fact that the rabbit meat is soooo much sweeter than a cow or deer. Added to a spaghetti sauce instead of meatballs or sausage makes the sauce yummy and the meat gets even more tender as it is slow-cooked in the sauce.

When you get to lift that cow, I want proof. @papa-pepper proof. I am impressed with the homesteading tips. So many people are working towards self-sustainment and you are doing your part in teaching.

Bravo.

I'll let you know when I can lift a whole cow. So far, I'm only up to half a hog.

It's a start! ;)

As a food source, breeding a buck (male rabbit) and two does (female rabbits) can provide the same amount of meat as one entire cow over the course of a year.

Yeah, they reproduce like crazy!

Sure do!

Hey, my name is Nadine and I am new on steemit. I would be happy if you could check out my post and follow back. Thank you :-)

I love your post. Great!!!

How cute..that rabbit is very cute...

REALLY glad you made this video as I'm thinking about doing rabbits myself. I have a TINY urban homestead so the animals I can keep are limiting. I have chicken and quail but I'm getting a bit bored of just eating poultry, so rabbits seem a good bet.

Rabbits would be great for you. They are small and quiet, plus their manure is amazing fertilizer! You'll love it! Also, feed them your garden weeds and produce scraps!

That's what I'm thinking. The chicken manure is great but man....it's sooo darn strong that it needs LONG composting before I can use it. Rabbit poop would be ideal!

Your videos are always amazing @papa-pepper. Thank you

Thank you. I try!

Wow rabbits looks really cute :) you can also see my post on homesteading sir if you like :) https://steemit.com/homesteading/@julstamban/home-steading-2-or-paragis-grass-goose-grass-cures-serious-illness-diseases

Yes, I remember commenting on one of your posts that we rear rabbits too.

The mother rabbit gave birth today - Six!
So, it's fun and educative reading about rabbits here.

Until your next post...

Congratulations! Did you do a post on it?

Hi @papa-pepper wow what a bunny you have over there, indeed i have really enjoyed your video post so much and i am very glad to know that rabbits are easy to bread and look after in that they don't require alot in terms of food and moreover their benefits are very many like providing manure through their waste product and also they are easy even to butcher, lastly those baby bunnies complement it all perhaps thank you for your post @papa-pepper.

Hey, @papa-pepper! You forgot to mention that rabbit eat is better for you than beef. It is lower in fat and cholesterol, and easier to digest. And for us, we prefer rabbit over beef any day!

I know wild rabbits taste good too, I presume tame ones are also good for the pot.
I can imagine a swarm of rabbit tractors slowly working their way across the farm leaving a "newly mown" texture, covered with rabbit droppings, behind.
You will have to cross some with a beaver to remove some of the unwanted trees next Papa. lol

LOL - I'll have to try that beaver crossing bit!

Just think, breed like rabits, clean up trees like beavers, fertilize like both. You are on a winner, now how to use all those snakes, if you joined then mouth/ fangs on tails, it could make a good rope, could be a new use for them as well.

Rabbits are really hard to eat when they are alive they keep wiggling as you try to eat them. And the fur gets stuck in your teeth even if you put mushroom gravy on them first.

Yeah, they are much better to eat after they are killed.

Great points. In your opinion, are rabbits a better choice than chickens if you could only do one or the other...

If you are not looking for a source of eggs specifically, then yes, especially if you garden.

Thank you

Since you're talking both plants and animals, have you looked into aquaponics?

Yes, just not there yet.

Great info,
