THE WILD-MAN EDUCATES - HOW TO TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A NORTHERN WATER SNAKE AND A PLAIN-BELLIED WATER SNAKE

in video •  7 years ago

Sometimes in life, accurate identification of a wild animal can be crucial.

Water snakes are among those creatures that many people are very confused and timid about, and with good reason. Yes, some venomous species do exist, and when that truth is coupled with fear and propaganda, soon every snake near the water becomes a potentially fatal situation in the minds of many.

There are so many nonvenomous snakes that will swim out there, and many species of water snakes that are not venomous. I believe that it is the duty of humans to at least attempt to educate themselves about the wild creatures that they may encounter ahead of time. Who really wants to be uneducated and ignorant?

I have been planning on making this video for some time now, and finally caught the species that I needed at the same time. With the different colors and patterns within a species, often accurate identification can be difficult. Both the Northern Water Snake and the Plain-Bellied Water Snake are nonvenomous, but since their populations overlap in many areas, it is worth the effort to be able to distinguish between the two.

In this video, @papa-pepper attempts to break things down into the simplest terms to understand. I try to make is very easy for even the most unfamiliar person to be able to accurately differentiate between these two common species of water snake.

In case you didn't pick up on it, this was supposed to be a #funny one because I enjoy #humor too. After all, I am a humorist. Thanks!

Yep, I totally agree. And in some cases it can be a matter of life or death. Thanks for sharing! I am petrified of snakes, it's a phobia actually, and I would not hold one in my hands under any circumstance.. 😨

@imwatsi ~ I write poems

You are not alone in that phobia. Thank you for checking it out anyway @imwatsi!

It was a pleasure, frighteningly so ☺

Right, so many are pretty much completely harmless.

I will avoid snakes anyways but thanks papa

Many people do. I understand.

ok

Thanks for the information regarding water snake. I usually don't pay attention to northern water snake vs plain-bellied water snake, but I definitely keep that in mind when heading out on the bayou.

Many do not pay attention, but if they want to, now they can! Thanks!

No doubt... I will definitely keep and eye out for sure. thanks!

They only bite, then I bleed, then that's about it, but thank you!

Thank you!

Really educating

Sometimes it can be! Thanks!

Well, you learn something new everyday

Im already terrified of snakes, but now I know what to look out for haha

Now you know! Knowledge is power!

how can you play with snakes....its amazing!

They aren't so bad once you get to know them.

really?

Yes, really.

Good information, thanks for sharing

Thank you for checking it out @freddbrito!

Nice post! I am curious which is your favourite snake?

I have never even thought about that before... I have no idea. I'll think and try to get back to you.

ok man, thank you so much. I am really curious :D

I think the Eastern Hognose Snake.

You can check out on of my posts on it here: https://steemit.com/nature/@papa-pepper/the-eastern-hognose-snake-a-photographic-experience-plus-a-few-short-videos

ok, thanks, yes, it's a beautiful snake :D

I think people would be less scared if they had an easy (tech) way to identify snakes/spiders in the field. Google Glass 2025?

Hmmm, you are most likely correct about that, although some are just afraid of them all, regardless of what kind they are.

i could never tell the difference, because i won't even take a second look.

LOL - You are not alone in that!

Lol.. Nice 1.
The plain bellied water snake ;)
Plain ol steemin'

Thanks. I thought it was a good one too!

Love the video and idea buddy. You are the Steve Irwin of Steemit my good sir :)

Cool, thank you for enjoying it! I like Steve Irwin.

Heck yeah I love stuff like this. I love the outdoors so anything like this where I get to learn about survival techniques and the outdoor, I am all eyes and ears.

Thank you for what you do. Just know that you are appreciated.

I think water snakes are less venomous in comparison to land ones!

Some sea snakes are pretty bad.

Cool post. Never got to see many snakes in my life, I grew up in the prairies and mountains so I didn't encounter them much. Always thought snakes had a certain charm to them (no pun intended, hahaha) I find they are kinda cute in a a way :) Thanks for sharing @papa-pepper!

Interesting one! Though I don't have water snakes in the area I live in, checking out the video as I type... and btw, totally, totally love your proof photographs... the concept as well as the creativity in the proofs! :) Upvoted with a laugh!

Yeah, those proofs are good for many things, including a laugh! Thank you @sandzat!

We don't have aot of snakes over here in Scotland, but a great post and great video, I'll know a bit more and be a bit more educated now, toll I get in this kind of situation where I encounter one if these beautiful creatures, mix them up and the mumble oh shit... Thnks for the post!

Well I just prefer not having a work with snakes :D. Great article, cheers!

You are not alone in that preference! I guess many people feel that way.

tnx for fixing my ignorance, but I still intend to run away from snakes lol

LOL!

Ular yang sangat mematikan,,,

I just wanted to cut to the meat of the subject, without all of the filler and promotion.

I like it :)

Good to know, bad to meet the wrong snake...

Wow!! Thanks for the info! I have a cousin who is absolutely mad about reptiles and snakes. He just spent a month in Ethiopia helping out on some projects. I better get him to have a look at your videos :)

He may like my 'The Wild-Man's Wild Friends" video series.

Will definitely send him a link. Thanks man :)

Thank you for enjoying my post anyway.

I see snake,i run.
That's my philosophy. :)

There seem to many who share that philosophy with you. LOL!

Wide-man, how do you these dangerous animals? How come they don't hurt you?

Most of these cannot really hurt me. All they can do it bite. When they do, then I bleed, and then I heal.

Hahahaha! Response of the week.

Hahaha! I love it. This is the best Animal video yet! Lol. Short and to the point. Love it! Informative post as well. But like I said love the video. Very funny. Lol!

I have been waiting to make that video for a while now. Finally caught the right snakes! Thanks man!

You're welcome sir! I'm not going to lie I was expecting a whole long video like before. And then when it ended I just cracked up. Lol. I love it!

I think this is a great post and it illustrates some good points.

Whether you are afraid of snakes or not, the key here is to THINK before you overreact, dealing with snakes can surely be scary if you have no idea if it's poisonous.

That fear is the same you have going to a Job interview, and it's means you're unprepared.

The solution is to learn what snakes are indigenous to your area, or an area you might be camping in for example. That will not only relieve allot of the stress that could be generated upon discovering a snake in your area.

BONUS: but if you are mentally prepared there is a whole other side of it:
-adventure, discovery, FUN... ( as well as being Safe and having Peace of mind ).

It changes your whole experience when you don't loose control of YOUR situation.

That can only be done thru some level of preparation, experience & knowledge.

Here in Texas we have Rattle Snakes ( lol ) so... Count your Blessings :-)

We have a variety of rattlesnakes here, plus the copperhead and cottonmouth.

So far, I have only been able to find the Pygmy Rattlesnake, as far as rattlesnakes go, but I've found a few.

It is not so much me finding the venomous snakes that I am concerned about, it is the @little-peppers and others, but so far, they have done a great job of finding them and letting me know.

Most of the rattlesnakes I've caught was because children told me about them. Thanks.

It's really very important KIDS most of all are well informed about Snakes. Most kids are smart or scared enough to do the right thing, just let it be and walk away. But there is always peer pressure and always that kids who's so cool he has to go screw with it to be popular. That's how accidents happen.

Very Excellent Post.
-Guns & Snakes are not bad, people with no knowledge or expertise around them are.

I'm too afraid of snakes but yes this is a good post.

Yup... I'm still afraid of snakes. Thought I'd check this out, just to see :) Although the more I learn, the less I'm convinced one is going to pop out of nowhere and give me a heart attack! Thank you for this... and be careful!

More stinky snakes!

I'm not sure where you are, but I'm going to be moving some things from storage in Arkansas this weekend, and there will likely be some homesteading/gardening things I don't have room to haul. If there are any Steemians in the Searcy County area who would be interested in them, I'd love to pass them along.

Interesting, what day? If you are on https://steemit.chat , you could hit me up. I would love to use some tools and stuff that were given to me by another steemain.

It will be Saturday. As soon as I find out what's in the storage unit, I'll let you know. Would love for someone to get some use out of the useful stuff :)

Cool, I should be an hour away or less, so that should work! Thanks!

I am in the next county over, so that could work out well.

I am on discord too if you prefer.
