I am not a tourist here even though I certainly feel like one most of the time. I moved here in the hopes of being able to set up a life here and so far it seems as though this is going to be quite achievable.
I don't do fancy stuff for the most part so even though that does exist here, I wouldn't know about it. The rooftop bars don't appeal to me near as much as the ones on the beach where the beers cost 1/10 as much and taste exactly the same. Plus I can bring my dog to the beach bars.
Here are some additional benefits to living in Da Nang, Vietnam as far as I can tell thus far.
Well maintained beach

The massive walkways on the beach are just amazing. Also, most of it is at least somewhat covered all day long because of the massive trees that were either left intact or placed there intentionally after it was built. The constant breeze from the ocean insures that this stays reasonably cool as well. I run or walk here almost every day and a lot of others do as well. Plus it is free and that is my favorite kind of price.
Condos are "cheap"

I probably should have tidied up for the picture but hell, I said "regular life" in the title and this is what my place looks like most of the time.
I know that "cheap" is a relative term but I just moved here from Thailand which is a place that most people would consider cheap anyway. Da Nang is much cheaper and I can't say exactly why that is. There are loads of condo establishments near the beach like mine that can be had for under $400 a month. These places are fully furnished, have 24 hour security and CCTV as well as included internet, tv, and water. So it ends up being a tremendous value.
I live a couple blocks from the beach so I would imagine that like most places, if I were to move further away, the condo would be much much cheaper.
My place isn't huge at 60 square meters but it is more than enough space for me and my 6kg dog.
Booze, glorious booze

I drink a lot of beer. You could say it is a big part of my life. If you don't drink: Good for you, i am sure your liver is in much better shape than mine. However, even though I have to exercise a great deal because I drink so much, it is what i want to do and I'm gonna keep doing so.
Local brews like Larue and several others that are made in Vietnam can easily be acquired at a bar for under $1. This one place that I like a lot you can get two of them for $1 during happy hour. At a grocery store or minimart they are 40 cents.
This is dangerously cheap and I am going to need to transition to a light beer soon or I will find myself reverting to my old weight, which is not something I want to do.
Huge variety of restaurants

If you don't know a great deal about Vietnamese food then you and I are in the same camp. I know almost nothing. Therefore it is just wonderful that pretty much every other style of cuisine is available. In the past two days I have had fusion tacos, pizza, a Japan burger (it had wasabi on it), and a bowl of something Vietnamese that I don't recall the name of (it was good.) All of this was within a few blocks of my condo and all of it was under $5.
So I suppose the point of all this is that so far, the move here appears to have been a very very good idea at least from a financial perspective. When I was in Chiang Mai and Krabi, Thailand; it was very difficult for me to keep my overall expenses under $1000 a month. Based on what I know so far about Da Nang, I think I can easily keep it under $700. Score!
The condo, a great deal. Sounds like a "regular life" is pretty damn good. I love your dog. So cute!!!

That does sound pretty good tbh! How is the pollution in Da Nang? I've heard that the pollution in some cities of Vietnam are just as bad as in Thailand.

oh the pollution is almost non existent here. This might have something to do with being on the windy coast but the AQI is normally around 25-40 here.

That's perfect and definitely a huge advantage for your health. So don't worry about the beer to much ;)

Lovely scene and I'm glad you have a lot of beer around you. Beer has a way of stemming the time and reducing the loneliness you may feel from being around a bunch of strangers. One of my many beer mantra is "I don't want to die with a healthy liver because when I'm dead, I won't be using it anyways".

You might want to have your liver enzymes checked. I'm guessing getting seriously ill in Vietnam would not be a picnic, although it is a former socialist country, which means there should be more doctors than there otherwise be.
Vietnam sounds great for quiet and relaxed living. Are taxes low or high there?

taxes must be low because everything is so inexpensive, even imported goods. However, i don't pay income taxes so I don't know about that.
Vietnam has private international hospitals that are almost world class. However, nearby Thailand and Singapore have truly world class medical care if anything serious were to happen.

Looks great but I always long for company. I lived once in an apartment in AZ, overlooking a swimming pool, great weather everyday.., but the loneliness killed me.
You probably don't know anyone there right, all your mates being left behind? Time to get down to the bar and meet some new ones.

oh i'm pretty good at making friends. I don't know very many people but I know a few and we meet for drinks pretty much every day. This community, just like most expat communities, tend to be older retiree ones, so i get to once again feel like the kid because there is always a fantastic chance I am 20 years younger than everyone else.

That is amazing and an overall saving of more than 30 percent. Where else could you do something like that and the place is not bad either. Keeping money in the bank and having a good life is key as it leaves you room to do other things. With the harriers you will meet new people and you sound like a social cat so you will be back to normal in no time.

unfortunately the Hash is all but dead here. Once I have been here a bit longer I may attempt to revitalize it but I do not know the area well enough to set a trail. Time will tell.

That is awesome! Those views of the beach are just amazing. We finally hit close to 50 degrees here and it almost feels like Spring! When my dad was in Vietnam he had a dog that they named meatloaf. I have seen pictures of it from the slide photos that he took. Much different looking than the pictures he showed me from Da Nang. It looks like you are going to be really happy here.

I was talking to someone that I met here recently who had a dog named meatloaf also. He was American and from New Hampshire.

Haha, that is too funny. I think my dad was stationed at DaNang for the better part of his time over there. He was in the Navy and worked on the base. Got along better with the locals than most of the other sailors from what he tells me.

Looks like Nadi found a good spot on that chair :-) So far sounds like you have a good deal there. Beer seems to be my big downfall too. I like the IPA's, porters and stouts.. not good for the weight. I am not as fit as I once was.. I used to be a wrestler while going to school. I wrestles between 112 and 135. No longer can do that! Thanks in most part to the Beers. haha.. hard to give them up when they taste so good. ugggg. The beach bar sounds awesome! We hit those up in the summer (obviously) Any where at the shore really.. Atlantic city, Sea Isle City, Wildwood, or Cape May. Can't wait to get the top off the Jeep and hit one up now that your putting the idea in my head!!! haha.
