Vietnam starting to clamp down a bit

in vietnam •  5 years ago

I have been bragging in the past about how in Vietnam life has been carrying on more or less as normal despite the Corvid-19 pandemic and of all the countries infected (it's almost all countries now) they have been seen as doing the best job of containment, especially in South East Asia.

With a really low infection rate and zero deaths reported, it is kind of hard to look at what is going on over here and disagree with their tactics.

If this data can be trusted, then I would say that Vietnam is doing a phenomenal job of containment. I don't know enough about this country to know if they are in the business of lying to their own people but I also don't know of anyone who knows anyone, or has even heard of anyone that knows any differently than what we are being told. If they are lying to us, they are doing a very good job of that!

I have seen freedoms taken away piece by piece and although I have my own opinions about whether or not this virus is really to be as feared as the media is claiming that it is, I am not going to defy the rulings of the country that I am a guest in. Many of the social distancing mandates were merely recommendations and as of yesterday they have now become "orders."

It was determined on April 1st that the entire country would go into lockdown and that most shops and public areas are to remain closed until the 15th. Since I work online and don't mind watching netflix all day I suppose you could say that I'm ok with this and feel as though the government has been handling this all quite well. It seems as though this is the prevailing opinion of the nation.

This chart is actually pretty crazy to me since in the past 2 months I have lived in the countries on both ends of this spectrum (Vietnam and Thailand) and yes, I do realize that this is just a poll so it isn't any sort of official anything but if I had to say whether or not I thought the government here was doing enough I would say "yes they have" but a lot of this has to do with the fact that they reacted so quickly: They closed the schools immediately after finding out about the virus' existence in next-door China and quickly moved to close down the borders with very few ways in or out. If you follow my stuff you know that I was on a damn near empty plane when I came over here in late February.

This might change to "too much" pretty soon though. I don't know if it is going to stick but all restaurants have been forced to stop operating including doing take away and delivery yet giant supermarkets remain open. In my mind this makes very little sense because now we are going to have the massive groups of people all in the same place whereas the take away / delivery aspect of it kept people spread out. Perhaps the fear is that if a delivery driver was positive, they would stand the chance of infecting everyone they deliver to... but what about if a clerk at a supermarket has it? Wouldn't that be substantially more exposure?

I suppose they have their reasons and I am not going to rock the boat locally. I'll just bitch about the fact that I have to eat instant noodles for the next 2 weeks while I watch Tiger King

Of course if i run out of treatie-pies there could be an uprising in my living room that I am not prepared for.

don't let that cute exterior fool you. She is a killing machine if the treatie-pies run out

I am struggling with the changes and like you, I have reservations about the severity of the virus.
I'm speaking from a Nigerian point of view where poverty is the order of the day and a large section of the community actually die of malaria, hepatitis, typhoid and even cholera. It is rather interesting to see so much fuss about this virus.
Around here, they've taken away our liberties and the police and twat military are brutally enforcing the sanctions/prohibitions. It is so bad and ridiculous that they even prevent people from selling food. I can't wrap my head around it. They've also shut down most public transport, effectively preventing the "essentials" from going to work.

I'm trapped at home and it feels like I'm caged and might be losing my mind. I talked about my feelings here

I walk around and see that a lot of the people, at least in DaNang are already ignoring parts of the order, and a few people are on the beaches and going to restaurants anyway. The shutting down of all take out and delivery really befuddles me.... I don't understand the purpose.

Same here. I can't make any sense of it. Food is as essential as anything else

They've extended everything here until May 1st now. I fully expect myself to have transformed into Jack Torrance by that point. Except instead of chasing after my son with a fire axe it'll be a fat angry cat. Which is kind of the same, I guess.

Hope you're doing well and everything. Stay safe, dood.

yeah things are ok, just getting cabin fever. My economically small condo seemed like a fantastic idea until i was forced to stay in it all day and night long :P

you are over in Cali right? i forgotz

Nah, I'm in the wonderful swamp land and corn fields of Ohio. Our Governor was on top of this shit before anyone else, so we've been in lockdown pretty much before any other state. I've been in my apartment for 2 weeks now and have only went outside to take short walks, go to an urgent care and check the mail downstairs.

Taking this shit pretty seriously since I have a mother who is immunocompromised with COPD and asthma. Plus, I have asthma as well so I'd rather not catch it and end up on a ventilator for 2 weeks. If I didn't have a cat and a fiancee here with me I'd have probably started licking my toilet seat out of boredom and insanity. Plus, all that sweet clout I'd get since that apparently now gets you on Dr. Phil.

If you're bored and need someone to chat with occasionally to pass anytime, feel free to hit me up on discord, by the way.

ball's in your court pal. I added you on discord, i think :P

some restaurants are still delivering although they are doing so in a very covert way and only to regulars. I think it's a grand conspiracy on the part of the minimarts to sell more pre-packaged rubbish sandwiches! Just kidding of course.

oh really? I'm gonna have to start asking some people that have lived in DaNang a bit longer than me. I'm starting to get really tired of the few food items that I have been eating over and over again.... especially the pot noodles.

urgh, those things are terrible for you also. Chemicals basically.
